OK! So I used to have guinea pigs and I’ve decided I’d like to get a bunny. I worked with pets for 6 years but I no longer have contact with the same people. I have NO idea where to get my bunny from. I’m very picky and I want to make sure my rabbit comes home healthy.

I went today to go look at a local breeder and I’m not sure if I was impressed or disapointed because I’m not sure what’s standard. Her place wasn’t completely trashed but there was a lot of hay everywhere and the cages she kept them in were in just okay conidition. She couldn’t give me a straight answer whether the 2 bucks I was interested in had mites. She said it was a common thing at rabbitrys. Is this true? Ive heard awful things about buying them from pet shops and there aren’t many breeders in my area. I just need some answers! Thanks

I strongly encourage looking at your local animal shelters and rescues. Rabbits are the 3rd most turned in animals at shelters and many are in need of good homes. Also, local advertising sites like kijiji and craigslist sometimes have rabbits people need to find homes for. Goodluck!

I also second the rescue/shelter option. You can pick a bunny that suites your personality/home and they also get health checks so you’re unlikely to get a sick bunny. They are also usually spayed/neutered which is expensive to get done in most areas so it’s usually less expensive in the long run to adopt.

http://www.petfinder.com/ is a great place to find adoptable bunnies. Just type in you zip code, and select rabbit. Even if you do want a specific breed, don’t use that option, the bunnies are frequently misidentified, and sometimes they just put “bunny rabbit” as the breed.

Yes, highly recommend checking adoption sites like petfinder.com (as Eepster said) or Adoptapet.com if you don’t know any rabbit shelters in your area. There are so many good rabbits that are surrendered by no fault of their own that just want a second chance! I would also like to add that shelters have more variety to choose from and can provide more information about the rabbit’s personality, overall health, and background story. They will be honest and will try to match your personality/lifestyle to the right rabbit for you. They also won’t pressure you if they see that you’re unsure because at the end of the day, their purpose is to find the right home for each of their residents.

I got my rabbit from finding a listing off adopt a pet. Here is Peony’s listing (How I find her :3 )

As others said, there is many befits  to adopting and one of them is actually saving some money. The best part however is giving an abandoned pet a home.

However, if you really want to go to a breeder, then i have to agree with you they tend to be better then a pet store. Employees are likely not be rabbit savvy, tell you the wrong things how to care for them, get the gender wrong, and so forth.

Adopt… rabbits are often bought irrationally from pet stores as a child’s first pet and then later abandoned because the parents and child didn’t realize how much work it is to care for a rabbit; much more than a guinea pig, rabbits cant survive in a cage all day <tiny tip…

Ive always adopted, and quite frankly, its great. They usually come litter trained, neutered, and happy.
