My rabbit scratches his ears occasionally and I have wondered if it was ear mites many times before. There was nothing inside of his ears the first time I checked a few months ago except a small amount of yellow wax deep in the canal and I check occasionally and it’s still there but never gets worse. After a few months would there be more signs of mites if he had them? The wax is barely noticeable I have to use a small flashlight to see it. There is a small red scratch mark/ sore on the edge one of his ears I just notice today. I bought some bunny ear cleaning wipes and tried to clean them out but the wax was too deep and I didn’t want to cause more problems with his ears. Should I be worried? I’m taking his to the vet sometime soon to get fixed I can have them check it then.

Occasional ears scratching is normal. It’s the excessive scratching/head shaking that is a sign of mites or infection. I would suspect mites would cause a very great deal of scratching.

It’s common for lops to get some wax accumulation. I wouldn’t try to clean his ears with anything. It will most likely dislodge itself eventually.

I wouldn’t be worried, like I said, unless there is excessive scratching. You can also use a flashlight to check for any redness of the ear canal which could be a sign of infection or mites. Another sign of infection is a foul smell in the ears.

I wouldn’t rush in; when your rabbit goes in to be fixed should be fine, your vet can check for mites then and clean his ears properly. I suspect it’s not mites though Unless things get worse, I would wait until he goes in for neutering.

If it were mites, you’d know… The itching is ferocious… There is also usually a foul odour in from the ears.

This is a picture of what ear mites develops into, and it does not take very long to arrive at this state. In a couple days if you notice some black residue in his ear, maybe you should make a trip to the vet.

But at this point, you’re all good.
