I recently rescued a bunny from the SPCA. He has been great so far but tonight he has been acting out of the ordinary. He has been trembling his lower jaw, breathing sort of quick and heavy, and earlier he made a gagging motion where he opened his mouth and looked like he might throw up. He only did that once, and is running around eating, drinking, and jumping since then. I have been researching but am not finding much.. PLEASE help me !

          Welcome to BB!

Did it only happen once? It might be a bunny hiccup. If you look up “bunny hiccup” on you tube you could see if it looks similar to what you saw.

Edited to add: Just in case you didn’t come across this already it’s worth noting that rabbits cannot throw up.

Thank you for replying! It did only happen once. It did not look like the hiccups online, it looked more like a yawn because his mouth was wide open and he hunched his back just like he was going to throw up, but of course nothing came out.

Oh gosh, when mine yawned for the first time it totally freaked me out! It does look odd at first, especially the hunching motion with their shoulders.

Thank you ! So do you think since this only happened once it could have been a yawn and even if it wasn’t it’s not much to worry about ??

I am still trying to get a picture of my bunny yawning. Could of been just that though my rabbit tends to stretch and yawn right after waking up.

Boris did the same thing again today and I called the vet, she said that it might be his Timothy hay causing him to choke. She told me to wet his hay and change it regularly ! Thanks for all the help

Is the vet a rabbit savvy vet? (do they specialize in rabbits?)

I’ve never heard of wetting down hay as this can actually allow it to mold which is toxic. It really sounds like he’s just yawning to me.

Wetting hay is what we do for horses who have allergies or are sensitive to the hay dust. Which is why it is wetted for those horses. This sounds safe to me if the hay is being changed regularly.

That makes more sense Marshmallow! For some reason I was imagining wetting down an entire container of it or something. If it was done before serving and changed frequently than it would not likely mold.

Yes that’s what the vet said he just might be a little sensitive to how dry the hay is and wetting it and changing it regularly should hopefully fix the problem !
