        Hi there,

I have just became a bunny mom to a 1-year-old female Lionhead bunny.   She has the best personality although we’re now pushing a week and she’s starting to come out of the “honeymoon” phase.  In other words, the completely mellow rabbit now has her true personality showing through.. When play time is over, she thinks not.   What she wants is what she wants.  Ms. Diva Bunny.

With very little history on her other than knowing she was housed in a barn with other bunnies for breeding and my not having had a bunny for over 20+ years, I made a couple of immediate poor choices.  My first mistake was buying a wooden hutch at Petsmart..  not big enough and poor quality.  Second mistake was giving her a little too much cabbage, which resulted in a singular messy bum incident.

I now have a 42″ wire dog crate in transit, a box of wire grid cubes stashed away and after a trip to Home Depot this week, I plan to put together a nice little roomy 2-story condo for her.   This clunky wooden box is going back ASAP.    I’ve been studying the various crate/grid designs used by others in this community. Talk about cute!  I am going to try a berber-type carpet for the second floor and hope she adjusts well to the change.  I’m primarily hoping the litter box training continues on the right path.  We’re getting there.. slowly but surely.

She has an appointment with a local vet (experienced and recommended for bunnies) to be spayed on Jan 20th, so I’m a little nervous about that.  Just primarily fearful something could happen to her during surgery.  From what I’ve read though, spaying is THE best decision to make for the longevity of the bunny.

I appreciate all of the information this community offers.. I’ve made it a nightly reading ritual.

Welcome!! It always takes first time bun owners a bit of time to get things on the right track. There is so much to learn! Thank God for BB! More pics of your adorable Fiona please!

              Congratulations – Lucky you!
I got my first bunny being 40+ – having had every other pet imaginable, this rabbit is the worst pet ever! Ha ha ha! Please BBer’s don’t take that the wrong way….. For most of you – you all know how much I love/adore my Henry (spoilt bunny).
Just the other day we had to put up baby gates with gate wire thread through (cause he got through my other blockades) to stop him from going into the lounge room, cause that is where I have stashed my chewable cane furniture and anything else he can destroy. So half my house is empty and the lounge is full! And now with a armful of dirty washing I have to try and open a gate to get to the laundry! My kitchen/dining room is so full of hay scattered everywhere it looks like a backyard barn. When we run out of fresh veg and say we’ll go to the veggie shop tomorrow and have frozen veg tonight – NO! We go that morning – Henry ‘can’t’ miss out! Should I go on? (I can – I have about 2 pages more, lol!) This bunny is the worst pet ever – and yet I adore him to the moon and back! Whatever annoys you, you struggle with, waste money on, again I’ll stop here, ha hah – You’ll find yourself doing it, cause these bunny’s have a way of stealing your heart! I hope my post gave you some strength to get through your adjustment with your Fiona Hopsalot with a bit of a giggle knowing your definitely not the only ONE! Ha ha hah! Cheers, Henry’s mum.

                Thanks for the welcome!

The UPS guy already delivered Her Majesty some wooden toys and a new hay rack this afternoon. I can’t wait to get her new home set up since this one seems so cramped. For now, it’s baby steps in the right direction. If there is one thing I’ve learned in the past few days it is the importance of patience with bunnies. Bunnies, obviously, have zero patience.. Now! Now! Now! I can totally relate to the hay scattered high and low and the trips to the grocer. My husband has been out of town for several days and I could have never left the house had it not been for bunny demands. Between the dogs, cats, bird and bunny, I’m pretty low maintenance.

I am glad she’s not scared of the dogs, cats or bird.. (and all the noise they can stir up). My oldest cat has already taken to her and been giving her baths during her exercise time. It’s pretty cute..

It’s so cold here now I’m just concerned about keeping her area warm enough tonight. Our downstairs gets pretty chilly and the temps here are unbearably cold.. dropped below 0 last night but tomorrow is supposed to be balmy 39 degrees! She seems to be doing good so far, nice and toasty.

Lots of reading to do tonight!

                  Welcome!
Not trying to stray the topic to “how my bunny tests my patience” but I couldn’t help but think about my Gizmo! Pongo was always so relaxed, but Gizmo is my male diva bun. Everything must be in its place in his cage and if I move it then he acts like the world is ending and runs around frantically! He also goes through waves of how picky he is about his litter box. If it gets too full, he will start to dig in it and drive me NUTS! I can think of many nights where I have crawled out of bed at 1 am just to change his litter box for him because it absolutely could not wait until morning! He will do the same thing with his cage…if it’s “too messy” (aka two pieces of hay on the floor) he will push everything around until I sweep it up. Oh! He definitely knows how to push my buttons but I love him! Haha!

Welcome. Congrats on your bunny. I also became a first time mom to 2 bunnies this past year. They are such wonderful little creatures that will keep you on your toes and fill your life with joy and then drive you crazy. This is a great site for information and help with issues!
