I really just wanted some reassurance on this.  A friend of mine with a mini lop was told by his vet that neutering a dwarf is not good as there is a 80% chance of death/complications because of the anaesthesia.  So of course I’m paranoid as I’m hoping to get Ziggy neutered this month.

Can anyone with a dwarf share their experience with neutering?  I’m now 2nd guessing whether I should go through with it.

Lol… Hopefully you don’t go to the same vet as your friend! That’s a big red flag that the vet is not competent with spay/neutering! The procedure is very safe if performed by a rabbit savvy vet.

I don’t think that is true at all if you have an experienced rabbit vet. I’m sure if you look on the House Rabbit Society website you’ll find some information that explains the risks/benefits in more detail.

My two dwarfs (one of whom is only 1 1/2 pounds) have been neutered. The 1 1/2 pound guy also has to get anesthesia for regular molar trims. He has bounced back from both of these procedures with no problems.

I agree with Beka! A rabbit savvy vet should have an overall success/survival rate of 99.5% or above (according to the HRS).

The HRS has a great guide/questions list for you to ask a vet before they spay or neuter your rabbit. It might help put your mind to ease:

Yep, spay/neuter is extremely routine. I’ve never heard of a rabbit dying at the hands of an experienced vet unless there was some other life-threatening problem already present.

Obviously this vet doesn’t know what he’s doing. Just the idea of something bad happening to Ziggy scares the heck out of me! I won’t be able to choose the vet when I get the procedure done because it’s through the Humane Society. But they do all their own rabbits so I would think it wouldn’t be a problem.

Humane societies do high volume, so they are very experienced. I would be comfortable going that route. 🙂

Hey rayray – My Henry is a Holland Lop (or at least I think he is – ha hah!) so have no idea – but just wanted to say I wish you and Ziggy all the best when you have the procedure done, I know you have been waiting a long time. I (personally) think you should go for it – you’ll be able to let him back on the bed, woo hoo! Let us know what you decide. Cheers rayray.

I’m doing it! A friend is going loan me the money and I will pay him half now and half next month. YAY! Fingers crossed he stops pooping/peeing the bed once the hormones have drain out of him.

Good on you rayray! I’m super excited for you both (is Ziggy eying off his new bed again?? Lol….). How wonderful you have a friend that will do that for you, he must really like Ziggy too! Let us know when the big day is, I know how worried you will be. Wishing you and Ziggy lots of ‘sleepovers’!
