So, a few months ago a I built my two Holland lops a Nic cage. They started chewing out the linoleum on the bottom, at the corners, and somehow are finding ways to chew it now, and I’m not entirely sure what to do.. My dad and I are gonna bust out a wall in our house in march, making my room 2x bigger. I want to make the cage bigger, but if I’m going to do that, I’m going to need a new flooring idea. Something they might not like to chew? If that’s even possible. Bear chews everything. I am looking for something easy to clean, so not carpet. Something that isn’t too expensive either. The linoleum worked perfectly until they started to chew at it, more, and more and MORE. I liked how easy to clean it was, so is there anything I can do?

I’m using leftover vinyl, though I’m guessing it’s simular to lino. Henry’s house is home made (the cage part) and we made it so the cage frame sits inside the floor frame. We laid the vinyl out first to fit snuggly on the floor to the edges then the cage sits on top – the edges are covered, so he is not able to get at a side/edge/corner to start chewing. Does that make sense? Sorry if it doesn’t, I’m not sure how else to describe it? But I hope you get the drift of what I’m saying…. Cheers kaye153688.

Okay, thanks, it’s something definitely worth looking into. C:

AndHenry’s advice is perfect. If you have the lino cut larger than the size of the condo, the edges won’t be accessible. You could actually get a piece of plywood and attach the lino to that. Have the flooring about 4-5 inches wider than the condo on all sides. To make things really easy, have your dad attach casters to the bottom so the condo for could be wheeled away for deeper cleaning underneath. It would only raise the floor a couple inches.

I’ve used vinyl tile on plywood to cover the floor of mine without issue.

Here’s a picture of my bigger pen (we were bonding at the time):

We put a short base around it to help keep any mess in. Each tile is .30 something cents at Home Depot. Very cheap! I actually cover most of it with a low pile carpet from wal-mart. My chewers/diggers don’t dig at it at all.

Here’s a pic of them eating on the carpet. So you can see how low pile it is.

Lily used to use a NIC cage and we put Coroplast on the bottom. That’s very expensive though, and bunnies tend to chew on it.

I also have a coroplast base. It has 5inch siding. You can order them specifically for your cage or even get 2 to place side by side. I also use a fleece liner made for the base. It has 3 layers of different materials. You can use one of those to prevent chewing or by the edge lining for the colorplast which is much cheaper than the fleece liner.

We use fake(laminate) wood pieces from the Home Depot for the bottom of our cages. I still use the NICs, and in one of the cages shown here I have plastic ties that are connected to the grids just to keep the rabbits from sliding it around. Its too thin for a platform, though. We use carpet glued to wood for that.

It sounds like we are gonna get some plywood for the base, making a small lip around the edges and use linoleum to fit it perfectly that way it’s not accessible to them.
