Possibly but also as rabbits age their eyes do get cloudy – best to have a vet look at it as LPT suggested.

Hi – I’m a new member on the forums and a first time bunny owner.

My bunny is 9 months old and at almost 4 months he developed cataract in right eye… we couldn’t afford to take him to vet so I fed him kale cilantro and carrots watched his eye and hoped for best -but his eye stayed cloudy … a couple of days ago his eye was weepy and closed shut – it was night time and I boiled some filtered water and after it was boiling I added a pinch of organic TURMERIC. let it cool to luke warm temp then dabbed a fresh cottonball in it and wiped his eye – repeated 3 or 4 times with fresh cotton balls … the next morning his eye was open and improved.

I repeated this process every morning for past three days and tonight it look like the cataract is GOING AWAY! HIs eye looks brighter and clearer – I am going to keep doing this and will report back if it heals his eye completely.

You can google search about turmeric and cataracts and you will see that indeed it is helpful for preventing cataracts (in people). Im just so happy that it is helping my bunny and it really seems that his vision is improved because he is even more playful and alert than before.

I have read these forums in the past and found them to be so helpful so I hope this information will be helpful for someone who may be experiencing same issue as we are!

                  Take care all!

                  Tinos mom.

I also suggest just to get a vet verify it is cataracts.Y vet told me theu have a particulary way (pattern) of forming so they can tell from taking a close look at the eyes.

There are other conditions that might make it look like a cataract in the eye but is infact something else that would require treatment.

@Tino, welcome to BinkyBunny. I’m glad you were able to see results with your rabbit but I am concerned it hasn’t been vet checked. I really advise you save for this and future vet care.

I also agree that getting the vet is best.  Home remedies can definitely be discussed though with a vet.  Tumeric being an anti-inflammatory may be helpful some cases, but in others, an anti-inflammatory can actually hinder healing (like if an ulcer is involved).   Sometimes things like that can be used in conjunction with vet care when the vet is aware.

Like Jerseygirl said, Cataracts can be caused by several things.  While cloudiness can be normal in aging bunnies, Glaucoma can make the lens look even cloudier as pressure pushes on the lens.  Also, when a cataract develops, (and in some cases, it can actually develop within a few hours –same thing with glaucoma) inflammation can accompany this.  I recently learned that this inflammation can burst a section in the eye if it not brought under control.  We recently dealt with a fast developing cataract in Viv’s “good” eye, so she has an anti-inflammatory for that eye.    (I will post about that another time)   But bottomline, any change like this should be seen by a rabbit-savvy vet asap.

Good luck and keep us updated.
