        Hi,

We are bringing home a bunny next week, and I was planning on using the old cage we had for my last guy about ten years ago, but it’s been in the garage and there’s a bit of rust on it. Is this dangerous for the bunny? Is there a way I could get it off that would be safe for him?

How big is the cage? You can try using steel wool pads and Coke. (Really). Rinse thoroughly and dry completely. Or try CLR Cleaner. (Calcium lime rust cleaner).

But make sure your cage is big enough or don’t bother cleaning it. Better to get an ex pen.

If the rust isn’t deep, you can usually get it off with steel wool.

Steel wool and coke? Yikes… So glad I don’t drink pop anymore 🙁

What kind of cage is it? What are the dimensions? Like Cheri said, it might not even be worth cleaning up if it’s not large enough or potentially unsafe (wire-bottom, for example).

I would be worried it has weakend the bars and would allow then to chew through or make the cage less secure….

Thanks for all the feedback. The cage is a dog crate and in addition we have an x pen and bunny proofed room, I just need somewhere to close him up at night. The bottom is lined with cardboard and on top of that is fleece cloth.

CheriB603–That’s crazy about coke having that power. If I used CLR could it be a threat if the bunny were to lick remnants of it?

                    Yeah..coke is really corrosive.
I would think with the CLR as long as you rinse & dry it should be fine. You can use it to clean mineral deposits from coffee pots and such.
