Where do you get these?  Are they marketed as litter boxes, or are they designed for something else?  I prefer stainless to plastic, so I’m very interested in these.

I’ve never seen anyone use a metal litter box myself. I’ve only seen plastic. I do wonder how metal would stand up to urine stains though.

Hm. I remember there was someone who had a metal one, but I am not sure on details. Think they made it themselves out of a roast pan.

Metal litter boxes can be dangerous to a bunny. They jump in & out of the litter box often & as they do, they tend to hit their legs/ knees on the sides of any box. If the box is made of metal, this could cause pain & damage to the bunnies legs over time because there is no give to the metal. Plus, if you keep your bunny outside sometimes, this type of box can heat up fast & cause discomfort or even burns to the bunny. And yes, rabbit urine can cause rust to develop inside a metal box which the bunny might ingest. So, with all of this to consider, it’s best for your rabbit that you avoid metal boxes all together & stick with soft plastic cat trays.

It’s not what you like for your rabbit, it’s what is best for your rabbit & what it likes. Please put your rabbits needs first before your own tastes.

Do not use metal litter boxes. As TK said they can be dangerous, if a bunny gets scared and jumps they can bang their head or a leg that has little fat cushioning and could cause an injury or possibly a broken bone. If it has any sharp corner or edges it could severely injure an eye or gash if the bunny got frightened and hit it. They would also provide a very slippery surface if the litter is pushed away and could cause injury with the bunny trying to exit or leave the box. Please use the plastic kind.

I WAS putting my rabbit’s needs first–I was thinking that she wouldn’t be able to chew a metal litterbox, and it would be easier to clean/more sanitary.

I come to this forum for education; I appreciate the info in this thread as I had not thought of Lola hurting herself by banging the edge of the box.  Maybe I read too much into the part of the post that I quoted above…

The response you quoted was out of line, and I apologize for that. The person who wrote that is not someone I am familiar with (looks to be a new member who has since disappeared), so I would just ask you to ignore that remark. The other replies you received were helpful.

I just use the plastic dishpans from the dollar store. Best part is they can be replaced cheaply if they get stained or overly dirty. A quick vinegar rinse seems to keep them clean and odor-free, though.

I use a shallow but large metal casserole dish for my girl Bleu because she chews the crap out of plastic liter boxes. I cant use plastic at all. I even tried rubbing ivory soap on the edges to stop her but nope, that didn’t work. To avoid her banging her legs I put the pan in a deep cardboard box so that way I can also throw hay in there as a source to hold the hay for her to eat. She loves it, and spends most of her time in her liter box lol.

I also line the pan with newspaper use a decent amount of yesterday’s news brand liter pellets to cover the bottom of the pan. Makes for super easy cleanup and I seriously have no mess in her cage with this setup. Hay is confined, poop is confined, and she is happy. With the plastic pans I had so much mess and was constantly worried she would have stomach irritation from eating so much plastic.

That sounds like a really good set up.
