The last couple times I have cleaned out Bears cage, I will pull his cage away from the wall, to clean out any poops that have found their way out of the cage. As I pull the cage out, I notice a nasty brown liquidy puddle along the wall. It’s near where his litter box is, but it’s all along the wall, strangely. Only on that side. It seems intentional, but it’s just gross, and was wondering what it might be.. It is unmistakably brown, and very liquidy. Almost like urine, but brown. :/ I have him neutered. He got neutered just last month. Any ideas as to what this might be?

It is pee. It he drinking enough? Urine can range in colors from pale yellow to a rust/brown color. If it is sitting out for awhile the compounds in the urine may oxidize and make it appear darker then it was when he peed. Since very dark urine can be a sign of dehydration or kidney issues you should look into this further just to be safe (but don’t be concerned because for some rabbits brown is normal). I would put paper towels in his litter box (if he wont dig/eat it) and keep checking his box regularly to try and catch the pee shortly after it goes. If it is still very dark on a white surface shortly after he goes then I would just check with the vet.

Neutered buns can still spray. It sounds like bunny spray to me.

Here I found an article from the University of Miami Biology Department. I believe diet and medications can also effect the color of the buns urine.

              ——————————

The Color of Urine Healthy rabbits excrete excess calcium salts via the renal system, and this can give the urine a chalky or opaque appearance. The urine will often dry to a white, chalky residue. Unless the residue is thick, pasty, and the color of mustard powder, this is normal, and should not be considered “sludge.”
Normal rabbit urine is usually pale yellow in color, but upon exposure to the atmosphere, compounds in the urine may oxidize to darker yellow, orange, red, or even dark brown. This isn’t unusual, and–by itself–is not necessarily a sign of a health problem. Blood in the urine, unless it is from a hemorraghing uterus or very serious problem, is usually not readily visible to the naked eye. Test strips are available at most pharmacies that will tell you whether there is blood in the urine or not, but your vet is the best judge of whether your bunny’s urine is normal.

Urine that is very dark immediately when it emerges may indicate that the bunny is dehydrated, and should receive more water, either by mouth or–in more serious cases–via administration of subcutaneous Lactated Ringer Solution.

Old urine can turn thick and brown. They often miss the litter box and I’ve been horrified by the gross liquid underneath.

Okay, thank you very much. This definitely helps, I will keep an eye on him, and I always keep their water bottles full. I will keep a closer eye on him to see how much he is actually drinking. It seems normal to me as to how much he does drink/how often I fill up his bottle, considering it is a rather small one.
