Hi, my female rabbit who is usually pretty tame and loves cuddles has just lunged and growled at me I was going into the enclosure to put her with her mate for mating! But now im staying out of there, why do they do this??

When you say “mate for mating”, I’m assuming you mean intentional breeding. Since this is a house rabbit forum, discussing intentional breeding is not allowed.

For your question about growling/lunging, I will assume then that she isn’t spayed. So the biggest reason for this behavior would likely be hormonal, although some rabbits are just possessive of their enclosure/cage.

Why not get them both fixed so you can permanently bond them? They will be much happier and healthier that way.

I agree with everything LBJ10 has said. This type of behavior is not uncommon in hormonal rabbits.

What is your long term plan for these rabbits? Are they pets or are you breeding them?

I don’t think it’s common to put the male rabbit into her cage to breed them, which is a forbidden topic on this forum anyway, but if you’re going to be breeding rabbits, you need to do a lot of research first. There are enough pet rabbits waiting, often dying, in shelters. Think long and hard before you add to the rabbit population and be sure you know what you’re doing.
