So I have begun creating a cardboard playhouse for Penelope, as she really loved the tunnel boxes I made her. She was in total binky bliss when she realized she could run through them at top speed on the carpet lol! I know that I obviously won’t be using tape or glue to secure the boxes together as she could ingest some part of that if/when she starts chewing cardboard. She hasn’t been keen on destroying card board or paper (boxes, paper towel tubes, tp tubes, phone book pages- all uninteresting chewing options for her) as of yet, but who knows. Would it be safe to use zip ties to secure the boxes/extra layers of cardboard together?

Yep, zip ties are generally fine. Most people use them to secure cages made with C&C grids.

Thanks, that is what I thought also, but wanted to be safe and ask someone with more experience. I will post photos later

I used zips for my condos but I cut the long plastic end off so it won’t get chewed.

That is exactly what I did Great minds here! I’m working on uploading some photos of the progress now.

So here is what I made today. I am planning on building more on and any suggestions would be helpful. I thought about possibly buying a cat scratching board to add as a ramp to an upper level later, I read in an old discussion that some bunnies like them?

                    That is so awesome!

I hope she admires your handiwork and doesn’t eat it!

Haha, I don’t really mind if she eats it I used double layers of heavy duty cardboard throughout and four layers on the interior part of the top for strength and durability. In total all it took was $6.00 and a 1.5 hours of my time. Well worth it I’d say as she seems to like it a lot!

Thanks! I want to add to this weekend. I am a crafty kind of person and this was a lot of fun to build. SO, much fun in fact that after doing this one, I went down and got some boxes and built a large scale one for the younger kids to play in lol. The cardboard used for that one wasn’t safe for the bun as it had been stored for awhile and also had the glossy finish on the exterior.

Great job on the play house, looks very sturdy too. I was too lazy to make my own, so bought a pre-made one from a pet store lols. I decorated it at least!

How did you decorate it? I would like to decorate Penelope’s. My daughter and I were thinking to make paints from ground/dried spices. Like basil for green, turmeric for yellow, cinnamon for brown and so forth. But, I need to finish it first and do some more research on which spices are safe for her to eat. I am working on the play house in spurts right now whenever I have the free time.

I love your diy playhouse! I can’t wait to see the finished product, with add-ons and decorations =D I’ve also made them for the buns, but it’s not as creative as yours. I just cut a few holes in two closed boxes and place them side by side sort of connecting them. They really like it, but I keep dreaming about building (more like buying) them a bunny castle.
