One of my bunnies wakes us with her thumping every once in a while.  It’s not every night thankfully, but when it happens it’s heard throughout the house.  (We have wood floors, sound carries).  I know she’ll thump at certain noises, wind, birds, etc, but last night she thumped from 1-4 am…and I could not figure out what was bothering her!  But I know she was bothered…she was very spooked.  I came downstairs to check on her several times and tried to calm her.  I’m tired of losing sleep over this…any suggestions??  She finally stopped and then my baby woke up, so no sleep for me!

        Thanks in advance.

Well, it is often a warning, like an alarm. Next time I would look around the floor first to see if there is any little creature, like a gecko or ant, that is in her habitat moving around. Or is something out of place?
Then take a peek outside to see if there is a truck or other activity (a cat?) near your home that may be setting her off. You have another bunny, right? Could be secretly bothering her as well. (MOM! He touched me again!)

If it’s something like an “invader of her space” it can be removed. If it’s outside, reassure her with pets and soft talk.

If it’s a way to get you to wake up and give her something, shush her, ignore her and don’t pay any more attention. I doubt this is it, but you don’t want to reward the behavior by giving her treats or food or even making it play time. That will make it worse and more frequent.

Thanks for your response RabbitPam. Yes I agree she’s annoyed/scared about something. I was just out of ideas because I couldn’t hear anything or see anything..it was making me nuts! I just pet her, and she was very stiff…which is typical of when she’s nervous about something. We live on a very rural street so there are frequently deer, foxes, cats and other wildlife hanging around. But there are deer around often and she never makes a stink. Birds, yes..but I couldn’t hear any. I’m thinking perhaps it was an animal, so I looked on the deck/ in back yard and couldn’t see anything. They are in our back sun room (inside) that is attached to the deck (they’re completely inside though). I know she is bothered if she hears a barking dog that might be too far for my ears to hear, so perhaps that? Oh I hope there isn’t a creature in my house!! haha It is possible there was a bug or something, but I took a look and again didn’t see anything. Whenever she behaves like this, which isn’t very often thank goodness, it’s always around the same time (1am – 4am). So I’m leaning towards an animal that’s out at that time only. If they sense that they are close?

Yes I have a second bunny, and he rarely ever thumps, it’s always nervous Oreo that thumps and Blu just stares at her. He looked scared like he was aware that something was bothering her, but he just sat in his pen on his cottage roof staring at her on her cottage roof! They are housed separately but next to each other.

Although it’s a valid idea, I don’t think she is looking for attention..at all. She loves her alone time I usually try to ignore it (bc I don’t feel like going downstairs) but it went on for so long that I wanted to check things out. She’s been calm and normal since..it was just that window of time. You’d think a baby would interrupt my sleep more than my (4 yr old) bunny!

Well I just found/heard the culprit….a cat was pressed against the glass of our back door that looks into the bunny room… Now how do I take care of that??

I can’t help but laugh at the idea of a cat being pressed against the window, licking its lips, haha. Do you not have curtains? I assume if she can’t see it there won’t be a problem? At least you know it’s nothing more serious!

No, it’s our back door onto the deck..no curtains. Problem is I think they were hearing it more than seeing it. I remember now that one time last year something similar happened and I could hear meowing. There’s a farmhouse behind us with outdoor cats and I’m guessing this might be one. My other bunny was thumping instead and looking like he saw a ghost…that’s when I looked out and saw it. Poor Oreo won’t come down from cottage roof to eat dinner…I put her plate up there so she’ll eat. And there’s no sign of it anymore but they’re both terrified.
