Hi all. So I’m working on litter box training my 11 week old Holland Lop, Thumper. I’ve tried 2 different litters- one the soft fluffy kind by Critter Care, the other a shredded paper. He ate both of them and I was afraid of him getting a blockage so I took them away and now he is just using an old towel, which works great for him, but gets very smelly. I’m thinking about trying my ferret’s litter, which is 100% recycled paper pellets and works fantastic for my ferrets, but I’m not sure if it’s safe for bunnies. What do you all think? Is it safe to try or do I just need to accept that the towel works and live with the smell?

Paper litter is safe. A lot of people use horse stall pellets or wood stove pellets (without accelerants), they are both the same thing. You can get 40 lbs for $5-$7, tons cheaper than any litter you can buy at pet stores. It would probably work for your ferrets too, we use it for both our rabbit and our cat.

The horse stall pellets can be found at stores like Tractor Supply, wood stove pellets at Home Depot or Lowe’s, they might be seasonal though.

On a different note, be very very careful with the ferrets and your bun. Rabbits are the preferred prey for ferrets in the wild, never let them have contact with each other. You probably already know that, I just thought I would mention it just in case.

Do you have pictures of your bun?

I use Yesterday’s News which is a paper pellet. It is safe and works great.

I use feline pine (WSP), it masks the smells a lot better than paper litters for my two.

If he has a habit of eating litter, you could get a litter screen though. Then he can’t eat it. BB store sells them, or you can make your own with a little hardware cloth and some wire cutters. Just be sure to either cover (cloth+needle and thread works) or file down the sharp ends and bend them around to the bottom so he can’t cut himself.

Oh, don’t use pin!!! It can cause kidney disease! You can use there hay, paper that has little no picture or words on it, Basically no inch. I use the kind you used at first but my bun does not eat it. I would find out what’s in toughs pellets, aspesaly if he is going eating it, look at the ingreedance. Make sure there’s no corn starch or anything. Find out if thoughts things are bad for him or not using the inter net. Good luck.

Pine SHAVINGS cause issues, including respiratory infections and other illnesses because of the phenols. Pine PELLETS have the phenols removed, so the danger is removed.

Yep, that is what WSP are usually – they have two types here, pine and aspen. Feline pine is more easily available to me, so that is what I use. But, WSP for stoves are cheaper. Just make sure they have no weird chemicals added (accelerants or scents).

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I love the idea of horse stall pellets, since they’re so cheap and because I live in a rural area feed supply stores vastly outnumber pet stores with specialty litter. So far I’ve spent $30 on litter that has been useless, since Thumper just wants to eat it all. A big $5 bag would be AWESOME and might work for my other pets as well! Thanks again for the advice.

PS Just so no one worries, my bun and ferrets are kept in 2 separate rooms so they can’t even see each other. I know rabbits are their natural prey in the wild. I learned they hard way they ferrets are not nice to smaller animals. About a year ago my neighbor’s child showed up at my door crying because his parents were making him get rid of his hamster and because I guess I’m known as the crazy animal lady he asked if I would take him in. I agreed and stupidly did not do my research and introduced him to my very gentle ferrets. They both immediately attacked. Luckily I rescued the hamster without him getting injured and he is still going strong a year later. But the experience taught me to always do my research first!
