i just recently built Flower, my 5 month old holland lop a nic cage. It offers her alot more space than that tiny pet store cage she had. However, when i do leave her nic cage open she rarely moves. She loves it in there i was thinking of giving her the same amount of room that i have. My room isnt a nice apartment sized or anything but i would like to give her the more space. I thought it might be a nice idea. I wanted to make a gate (similar to a baby gate) with the extra grids i have from building her nic cage just to block off my door from the inside, so she doesnt run past me when i open the door because i have two big dogs that would probably see her as a toy but i want to take all precautions to keep my baby safe. So, if i leave her cage open at all times, would giving her the rest of my room that the cage doesnt take up, be useless since she rarely leaves it when i do leave it open?

I think you just need to give her time as far as coming out of her new Nic cage goes. She probably isn’t entirely comfy in there just yet to feel ready to explore out of it. Give her some more time to settle in and she should start venturing out more. It also might depend on the time of day when you are opening her cage. My guy will stay close to his pen during the day and afternoon but venture out the later it gets. If you can give her more room then fine, but know that she might take a while to warm up to all the extra space. Just takes time.

Hi to you and Flower! I am guessing we live in different countries???? I have no idea what a nic cage is, but I’m guessing it is a great house for your bun…. lol. Hope its ok and not off track, but thought I’d let you know how Henry, who we have had for 6 months has slowly but surely taken over the house (dam) ha ha…. At first, even with an open plan house, he wouldn’t go past the dining area. As the weeks (not days) went by, he slowly made his way out to the big world beyond and hit the kitchen, then found the bedroom (& the packing boxes under my bed – doh!), and here we are today… I have boards up everywhere to stop him from going into the no no rooms, ha ha ha…
So it took up to 6 months, but he did it! Persevere, I’m sure Flower will get there as she gets her confidence and give her heaps (&heaps) of time.
            Good luck! & cheers!

Yes, give her time. My first bun spent his first year with me under a coffea-table where he apparently felt safe. Then he expanded his area. Prey-animals as they are, they can be super-cautious and reluctant to come out and expose themselves to the dangers of open areas.

Flooring is important though. They don’t like floors they can’t get “a grip” on, because obviously, it’s much more difficult to return to safety on a slippery or shiny surface like hard-wood or ceramic tile etc. If your floor is hard you need to lay out mats or newspapers etc.)

Thanks I’m really glad I did because her other cage was just soo tiny and people at the pet store recommended it! :/ and yea I sure hope she will crawl out of her little shell.
