It is my understanding that rabbits can’t vomit… So why did the vet tech tell me to withhold food the night before her spay? Should I do it or should I feed her normally?

I have both read, and been told by my vet, that you never fast a bunny. I would call for clarification. It is the opposite of what everyone else seems to say. Good luck!

The vet tech is an idiot… DO NOT WITHHOLD FOOD… All my vets have always told me to feed right up to the pre surgery stage (food in the carrier) and bring a snack pack for post surgery… Contact your vet immediatley and demand to speak to someone in charge and tell them what this idiot said… You may be saving the lives of many other buns that suffer because of bad information.

I tend to agree with Roberta. The vet tech probably said to withhold food out of routine, because all other animals and humans should fast before having surgery. Please call them back and ask for clarification. Bunnies should never fast.

I agree with others. Rabbits don’t need to be fast but sometimes non rabbit savvy employees at the office miss speak/don’t know because they’re used to dealing with cats and dogs. It wouldn’t hurt to call and speak to the vet and politely ask for clarification.

I wouldn’t go so far to say the vet tech is an idiot. Dogs and cats fast, so she’s simply rattling off the directions for surgeries in general. If you call up there, let the vet know what she said, so she can be reminded that rabbits don’t need to fast.

I will call them tomorrow. Thanks for confirming my suspicions.

If your VET tries to reaffirm the fasting, I would probably recommend a different vet for the surgery. But, yeah, vet techs often aren’t trained in exotic procedure and sometimes the person at the front desk is simply a receptionist who doesn’t know anything but what is on her instructions list. Never fast a bunny.

I agree with everyone else. And don’t worry quite yet, at least not until you speak with the vet. Not everyone that works there is going to be familiar with rabbits. It happens pretty often. The vet will know all about bunnies, but the receptionist or assistant may not. Since that is standard procedure for other animals, she was likely just rattling it off without thought.
