We finally got the all clear to have BB neutered after his bout with e cuniculi. It’s been 5 days since the surgery and as far as behavior and habits go he is completely normal, but this morning i noticed a whitish yellow crust on top of his incision and the area around it just looks very dry. I am wondering if this is normal. I’ve not been able to find any pictures of post op neuters for rabbits to show what i should expect and what is cause for concern. All the vet tech really told me for follow up care was to watch for seepage, excessive licking, and swelling. The exotic vet is closed today and the local vet sees rabbits but they’re not experts and I don’t want to carry him in if this is something that’s normal.

Could you take a picture of the area?

The signs of infection and/or inflammation are redness, swelling, increased warmth in the area and seepage. Excessive licking can prevent the wound from healing. So that’s why the vet told you to look out for these things. Dryness and whitish crust sounds kind of odd. The pic is of my Bam a few days post-neuter, I’ve posted it here before.

If I were you, I would just ring the vet and mention it. As Bam mentions, the usual problems are swelling and redness. Better safe than sorry so check with your vet.

In humans post operatively, a yellowish crust could be a sign that there was some seepage that has dried up. Without any pus coming out now, and without redness or swelling, it is not infected. The skin could be dry where he was shaved. Neither sound like infections or cause for concern. You could take a picture and send it to your vet to be sure (if he is ok with that)- then you don’t have to make the trip for nothing. Good luck!

I’m sorry i’m a tad late. His sutures looked nothing like that. from what i can tell he only has one incision toward the middle. I ended up taking him to the vet and it turns out he was working on a small infection. It still doesn’t look like normal skin yet. It’s been 11 days since the surgery and 5 days since they put him on an antibiotic. They look a little better but still not quite right. I’ve made sure his cage has stayed clean and dry and his litterbox is being cleaned everyday so hopefully that’s not contributing. I have a follow up at the exotic vet tomorrow. I just hope that he’s going to be okay.

I too hope he’ll be ok, good you went back to the vet! Maybe you’ll have to try another antibiotic if the one he’s got doesn’t help. Antibiotics is often given against the most probable types of infectious bacteria, but sometimes the infection comes from some other type of bact. and requires a different type of antibiotic. That happened to my dog when she was spayed. She then recovered completely.

There are various neutering techniques, my bunnies were done with one incision in each scrotal sac and no outward stiching. But your bunny has been neutered through a midline incision, which is supposed to be less risky infectionwise.
