So I noticed a small scab/flake on Simba’s left ear around 3 weeks ago and thought maybe dry skin or he had scratched himself too deep when his nails were really long before the trim. But a little under two weeks ago after his nails had been trimmed there was a fresh wound where the scab/flake was. I searched through the forum a bit for scabs/scratches and have been applying some Neosporin (regular) on the spot but he keeps scratching it and now the spot looks bigger and seems more circular than a straight scratch mark that I had thought it was.

I took a pic and was hoping if anyone can shed some light on if it’s possibly a bug bite, scratch, or something I need to be worried about. Also if there’s something I can do for it to heal because he just keeps scratching it back to a fresh wound when it starts to heal…

        Thanks!

I was going to suggest Neosporin until I read you’ve tried it.
If your vet has email, I would email her the photos above, tell her what you’ve tried, and ask if she can advise or if it warrants an appointment. If it’s a bug bite (or mite) she would recognize it as such probably from the photo and you’d need to get it treated.

Unfortunately I don’t have an email for my vet and Simba’s only gone once for a checkup and nail trim so not much of a relationship there yet. I was hoping this wouldn’t need a vet visit if anyone has experienced/seen something similar or have any suggestions to prevent a bunny from scratching it?

Well if it was a scab and he keeps scratching it, then it’s going to keep breaking open. But neosporin didn’t help at all? I know sometimes those scabs are itchy because they are drying out and healing. You would think even the added moisture from the neosporin would make it less itchy.

That’s exactly it! The neosporin helps a little in healing it but it doesn’t heal fast enough before he scratches it open again… if only he understood “no don’t scratch your left ear Simba!” =T
