Now my NIC pen is about 5ftx6ft (30 sq ft) and 42 inches tall.  I have one top grid panel that folds down so I can climb in and out but I use clips to keep it secure when not in use.  Do you think this is tall enough to leave my bun in his pen all day long while I am  at work? Also, my bun can't have free roam so is this adequate daily exercise space??  Excuse the mess! LOL

It’s definitely tall enough, but I’d make sure that the xpen is anchored in some way. Just case your bun decides to test how sturdy the walls are lol. I have a similar set up except my xpen is only 1 cube high. Mine isn’t a jumper haha~

Phew!! It is zip tied to the cage…and I have zip ties at every corner/side. How else could I secure it? I noticed that yours is only 1 cube high when I saw your castle post. I couldn’t believe it! Mine has just discovered jumping but so far 30 inches has been tall enough. With the castle in there now I wanted to make sure to add extra height.

Since it’s attached to the cage it should anchor it well enough. Couldn’t see that from the pic.

Yea I was surprised at how my bun never tries to escape lol. He can jump easily to the 2nd level of the castle and his cage. He’s also aware that he’s taller than the xpen when he stands up. Since he’ll poke his face over to beg for food sometimes.

That totally cracks me up!!! Mine jumped his previous 24 inch xpen so I upgraded to 30 and then upgraded to what I have now because of the castle. Last night I let him keep his cage open over night (of course I was a nervous wreck and didn’t sleep much) to test it out and he did well. Still there this morning. LOL. I left him out today while I am at work so I’m hoping to find him there when I get back this afternoon haha! Is 5.5×6 enough daily exercise space since he can’t have free roam?

If he’s a jumper – the one thing I would be concerned with, is that he could climb on top of his cage, and then jump over from there. I had to remove the towel over my boys cage — because one time when I checked on them in the middle of the night, I found Boo Boo on top of the cage, and Baxter looking around nervous LOL! Without the towel – they never tried climbing the cage.

Thanks for the advice! Not sure if you can really tell in the pic, but the pen is attached to the front of the cage and then I added two grids on top of the cage so it was one continuous wall. That way he doesn’t have access to top of his cage since it is technically on the “outside” of the pen. Yes, you are right, otherwise my guy would be on top of his cage in a heartbeat!

I wouldn’t worry too much while you’re at work. Rabbits don’t do too much during the day. Also the play area is a great size, so don’t feel bad about not being able to give him free roam. I have to do the same with mine since I live in an apartment with a roommate.

NikkiiRed, the pen is made from grids from Wire Storage Cube units.

They come ready to assemble but you can join the grids using plastic zip ties to form a pen.
You might find these from an online search to see if local stores them. Or purchase online. Be sure to get ones where the grid squares aren’t too large because a rabbit can poke their head through those.

Have you looked into puppy exercise pens or baby pens?

@Kbana, did the pen pass the bunny proof test? Did he stay in for the day?

@justwildbeat. I can’t believe 1 grid height contains your bunny! Lol! You’re lucky. That would make it so easy to get in and out of his pen. I can’t tell you how many bruises I’ve gotten climbing over pens and door barriers.

Yes! So far so good! I take the castle out at night though just in case. He loves it so I feel bad but I know I can sleep better knowing there isn’t anything he can launch himself off of! LOL. It is quite challenging to get in and out of. I have support column right next to it luckily that I can hold on to. Ha! He loves the extra space too! Binkies and Zoomies again. Yay!! And Thanks Jerseygirl for attaching pics of the grids!

thanks for the images i'm looking for that in stores but it has been dificult.. online is a bit expensive and i'm afraid it won't work because it isn't in front of me to see and try, you know?

but i'm looking for the other options as well! in Portugal they don't have much stuff for rabbits as in other countries bah.. but i'm not giving up haha

Those grids are hard to find in Australia also.
The ones I’ve found in store were a little too flexible and PVC coated. Ok for a pen but I found them not ideal for other habitats. Especially when buns would chew the coating off and the grids eventually rusted.

That’s very similar to the “front porch” pen I made for Porky’s condo. I made a doorway for me to get in and out. In the doorway column, the first row in fastened but the top two rows of grids are left unfastened. I use clips to hold them closed, and open it so I can easily step in and out

Am I being clear, or was that confusing?
