After he burnt himself, he stopped eating. We got him to a vet but he went into stasis and built up some gas. We now have him doing fluids, syringe feedings, motility drugs, antibiotics, pain meds, and gas drops. We know healing will take time, but we had X-rays done and know there isn’t a blockage. Curious how long the stasis lasts in most cases (he started producing a few pellets this morning), and if anyone has any insight on the time frame for his burn healing. He won’t eat on his own because the burn is inside his mouth, and so the syringe feeding can aggravate it I imagine. Does anyone have experience with healing an electric burn inside a bunny’s mouth? Thanks for your help, we have been very worried.

Oh gosh. Sending healing {{{vibes}}} for your little guy.

Stasis really doesn’t have an average duration. It really depends on how the bunny is responding to treatment.
Pain management is critical so I’d speak with your vet if you feel what he currently has is not adequete. You may be able to do 2 types of pain meds.
The downside is they can suppress the appetite but I imagine you’re going to have to do feedings for a while anyway.

Can you mix up his formula with chilled water?
Also maybe try some soft of soft tip for the syringe.

I can imagine this is difficult. I hope you see him quickly on the improve. It sounds as if you’re turning the corner. Fingers crossed!

Sorry to hear about the burn and subsequent troubles… Hoping all heals well and fast!

              I do not know if this helps, but in humans when there are sores in the mouth, we can use a “magic mouthwash”- which is a combination of pepto bismol, Benadryl and lidocaine. This basically numbs the mouth so it does not hurt to eat. I imagine it cannot be used in rabbits, but could you ask your vet if there is a bunny equivalent? There are even over the counter sprays that we can get in pharmacies (I live in Canada), like Chloraseptic, that will numb the mouth temporarily to make eating easier. It is worth a try to ask. Good luck! {{{{{}}}}}

Thank you all so much for your support and advice. Some very great suggestions we had not thought of. They may he apply to apply lidocaine which could help!!

Sadly, he doesn’t seem to be getting better…he had a lot of diarrhea today, which is better than nothing at all I suppose? We’re hoping his body is able to control the bad bacteria, we’re going to try and give him probiotics too.

It’s gotten to a tough point. Between his mouth bleeding, the pain he’s in, his diarrhea and lethargy it’s hard to know if trying to continue on will help him or just hurt him…

Has anyone else out there had a similar experience to this??

Do you think the diarrhea will clear up from your experience with stasis??

Any advice is very much appreciated

                Thanks,
                Jake and Shannon

                  What antibiotic is he on?

So he has very loose watery poo or sticky brown poo like mushy cecals?

I’ve read Questran is something used during stasis. It binds toxins in the gut and removes from the body.
