        Hey guys, I know I am here sporadically, but I truely appriciate everything I’ve learned from this site in the past year and a half, and the sense of community among the memebers here. I am asking first and foremost for you guys to send vibes to my Foo. She’s been having some issues, which we had thought were more depression related due to our mouse, Jingles, who was here playmate (she would check on Jingles in the morning, share her treats, and they would “play” together when Jingles was in her ball) dying. We made a vet appointment for her, today, and I am devasted to have learned she has a kidney infection. She is on an antibiotic, sulfa-something (I’m in class, and don’t have the bottle in front of me) for 10 days. If that doens’t work, our vet will presribe Baytril and then an xray to make sure its her kidneys. Again, first and foremore, I am asking for positive, healing vibes. If anyone has any advice to offer, that is glady accepted as well. I am so scared for my baby.

          Oh I’m sorry to hear. Hopefully the meds get on top of it quickly.

                I need someone to be honest with me. I know the internet likes to scare people, but everything I’ve read has basically said Foo will either be on meds for the rest of her life, or she will die. Like, is she able to just go through the treatment of Bactrim and be happy and healthy or should I really start thinking about the worst?

                  I would also ask the vet to do bloodwork as well.

                  And honestly have a very serious talk with the vet about your fears and any and all options to help Foo. It’s true that the internet is not always helpful and honestly we can only tell you our experience and likely it is different than what yours will be with Foo.

                    Okay, thanks Sarita. I figured as much, I just want to hear that I’m not going to have to say goodbye.

                      I agree 100% with Sarita. Talk with the vet. Also, seek second opinion if you’re not confident in your vets rabbit experience.

                      Every animal and person deals with infection or disease differently. There’s no telling how Foo will respond to treatment ahead of time. You just have to do it day by day.

                      There’s another recent thread by dewey on kidney infection. They mentioned a vet trialling a Chinese herb call Rehmannia. Something to ask your vet about maybe??

                        (((((((Foo)))))) Hope she feels better very soon.

                        I agree, the internet is horrible for scaring you when you are worried about your buns. I try to avoid doing searches because it just makes me more worried.

                          Just wanted to let you all know, Foo seems to be responding to the Bactrim pretty well so far. She’s still not peeing as much as I’d like to see, but she’s definitely perked up after two days of antibiotics. If it doesn’t seem like she’s peeing more by next week, I do plan on seeking a second opinion, just because the vet only did an abdominal exam and not bloodwork when we were there Tuesday.

                          And yeah, the internet is evil when it comes to medical information for buns.

                              Yay Foo! I am relatively new to rabbits, but I do know that in humans, antibiotics do not get into the kidneys and bladder without enough water. It is the same for bunnies. Would Foo tolerate it if you filled a 1-3cc syringe with water and released it while he licked it? Mine liked that when he was sick and wouldn’t drink. I am not suggesting force feeding- just putting the syringe tip in his mouth in the space between the front and back teeth, and releasing a little so he will feel the water and hopefully luck it up. That is all I can offer, other than {{{{{{Foo}}}}}}

                                That’s something to try, thanks. We had given her a water dish with a teenie amount of sugar free organic apple juice in addition to her water bottle. She seems to be peeing more, just would like to see more poop. She’sgetting back to herself slowly though

                                  Poor Foo I’m sorry to hear your baby is a little sickling. I’m glad that she is showing some improvement now. She’s been on the antibiotics for about 4 or 5 days now?

                                  (like little bunny foo foo hopping through the forest?)

                                      We have 2.5 days of meds left. She’s gotten better at taking them, and I’ve been sneaking them in with her food. Her tummy seemed messed up, so we gave her some critical care and baby gas meds, and she’s pooping, peeing, and eating like a champ. She seems to have recovered so far, we just hope that this isn’t a chronic problem, and now that we have taken kale out of her diet, we’re done with it (kale is her FAVORITE and she would snub everything but kale for a few meals, so it was all she was eating for the most part). She has a much more rounded diet, which was forced upon her, and we are working on being pellet free.
