Hi ya’ll.. So I really really need your help and suggestions. My Roo was supposed to get neutered on friday. I dropped him off and then a couple hours later got a call from the Vet saying that he wasnt going to do the surgery because he was afraid that Roo had a but of a respitory infection. I picked him up and paid the 175$ it cost for the appointment and 5 days of meds…

After getting him home he has been so terrible.. I feel so bad for him but I am at a complete loss of what to do.. It takes me about an hour or more to give him his meds every morning and night. He sprays me everytime.. I try doing the bunny burito and it worked once.. the other times he sprays me and just wont have it at all. but its not JUST when i give him his meds.. he sprays ALL OF THE TIME (not just with giving the meds).. I have had to tarp where his cage is because it gets everywhere.. I cleaned his cage today.. he sprayed me.. I went to clean up the poop 5 mins later and he sprayed me in the face.. I went to get him more water.. he sprayed and thumped.. I can’t even go near him.. I am having to shower 3 times a day because he is always spraying me. No one wants to go near him anymore.. Is there any suggestions? Please Please HELP

          Wear a poncho?
Sorry … Not helpful… He’s really upset about the whole meds thing and unfortunately he defends himself with the only weapon he has. Is it liquid medicine? Can you put it on his greens like a salad dressing? Hollow out a strawberry and fill it w / med? Mix it with applesauce?

Is it an antibiotic? Which one did they give you?

It isn’t just the meds though.. and he used to only try to hump you when you would put your hand in to pet him.. i would say he sprayed 10 times today.. I cleaned his cage and literally 30 mins later it looked like he is being neglected, it was soo bad. I tried injecting it in a banana..then mashing it up in banana.. worked for about a bite and now he wants nothing to do with it.

He is taking Baytril (enrofloxacin) 0.70 ml
I was worried that mixing it is taking away the affect of the meds… but is it okay to do that?

Baytril was the one Wooly didn’t like. We switched to a different antibiotic and he is willing taking it. Baytril is pretty standard though, that’s what is usually prescribed first.

My guess is that he is a hormone-filled ball of fury at the moment. He’s upset because he went to the vet and he’s upset because you’re trying to give him nasty medicine. Hence the thumping. Combine that with the fact that he is hormonal and you have the spraying. I would put something down, like a tarp to keep it from getting on things. Other than that, there probably isn’t much you can do until he is neutered. Perhaps when you’re not trying to give him nasty medicine he will calm down?

I think LBJ makes a lot of sense, I mean, he’s a teenager with an infection that needs to be cured before you can evaluate if there’s sth wrong with him. He’s hormonal and has a bad cold and you are being awful, awful to him.

You simply have to give him his meds, you could wear a raincoat, like a cheap raincoat for single use, the emergency-kind, the kind you have in your back-pack going trekking. That’d be easily rinsed off after each spraying-attack. And cover stuff he might pee on with a tarp or a shower curtain. Give him plenty of twigs to chew so he has sth to do, he shouldn’t be running around too much when he’s sick.

Best of luck! I know it’s not easy, my bunnies hate simethicone, us bunny mommies have to be relentless when it comes to giving meds.

Thanks everyone for your imput! After a couple bad days it has gotten a bit better. I was having a really rough week being sick myself and being stressed about Roo’s Vet visit… and I just felt soo bad for him.. he is SUCH a good bunny and it really broke my heart that no one wanted to go near him because of the spraying and that he had to take that awful medicine and was sick.. My main issue with the spraying wasn’t the fact that it was getting on my clothing but the fact that he shoots it high and was spraying me in the face! lol Anyways.. the medicine seems to have worked. His breathing is a lot clearer. Thanks again everyone

This is tough, but I’m pleased with your vet. I’d rather he be cautious!

Did you reschedule the neuter yet?

I haven’t booked his appointment yet.. I had.just enough saved for his neuter so it set me back a bit. he is my first pet.. I never realized how expensive he could be but i also didn’t realize what a wonderful personality he could have either. he is COMPLETELY worth every penny. Also..really love this site..you guys are so helpful!
