I’m still in the process of bonding with my 2yo male mini rex.  He lets me pet him and explores me and the livingroom.  I’ve never had a rabbit before so I’m not sure if he’s playing sometimes.  I’ll be on the floor with him and try to pet him and he’ll jump a foot away.  I’ve heard some rabbits like to play chase so I’m not sure if this is what he’s doing?  Or is he scared?  He’s never bitten or made any kind of noise at me.  Once in a while I’ll get a nose nudge and he runs away.  Hmm..  any insight is helpful on this!

It really depends on the bun, their personality, and overall context. Jumping away is not necessary playing. One of mine does this because he doesn’t like pets. Nose nudges is a good thing. That means he likes you and wants your attention but again, doesn’t necessary mean they want to play with you. It can just mean, look at me, or a passing Hi.

I agree with miaeih. It kind of depends on the bunny. You will get to know his personality. When you go to pet him, make sure to always approach from the side, not from the front of his face. Bunnies can’t see directly in front of their face. Also if you go to pet from above, it’s very much like a predator would. My bunnies are now at the point where I can pet them from any angle, but for a bunny still unsure of his human, it’s best to follow the bunny rules.
