I recently just rescued another rabbit.  I took him to the vet and they neutered him, took his blood work, and also did a check up and said he looked great.  There’s just one issue with him- he pees and drinks water like CRAZY!  He’s not peeing out of the litter box, and his pee is normal. However, I’m going through a bag of carefresh in about a week and a half!  It used to last me a month and a half with just Fonzie! Yes, I know… two rabbits require more litter.  But the fact that I’m changing his SOAKED litter box once per day doesn’t seem right?   Any thoughts, or suggestions on how to deal with this?  Is Yesterday’s News more absorbant?  Help.

I’ve never used Carefresh for my buns; it’s too expensive. However, I have used YN a lot in the past for my buns and I found that it never really absorbed well and have now moved on from it. My buns didn’t pee that much but with YN, I felt like I had to change it frequently. Now I use feline pine, WSP, or Cat Country. To me, these seem to absorb better.

I’m not fond of either of those – too pricey. Have you looked for any wood stove pellets or horse stall pellets as miaehl recommends? I use a brand called Lone Star Bedding but it seems to be local (Texas only). But I have used other wood pellets that work as well and are as affordable – I think I pay about $6 for 35 lbs of the Lone Star Bedding.

I used to love Yesterdays News but they must have changed it because it doesn’t absorb as well and really doesn’t neautralize odors, but it still does the job and a 30lb bag will last me well over a month. I think I’m making the switch to Cat Country to see if its better. Carefresh is really expensive for what it is. You’d be better off purchasing a large bag of bunny friendly cat litter.

I’m currently using a combination of generic paper pellets and wood pellets, that I think works great. I tried all wood, because it’s cheaper, but the smell of the wood itself was too much for me. Of course, I live in a studio so there is no escaping the smell.

But I agree, Carefresh is really not worth it and harder to clean up.

                  Pine pellets!
Used to use Feline Pine, but switched to getting my pine pellets in bulk from the lumber yard – MUCH cheaper and EXACTLY the same thing!

I used to use Yesterdays News, carefresh was too pricey, but thankfully Powder got over caring about the smell of pine and accepts pellets now. Cheaper.

Carefresh being soaked through once per day seems fine to me. It absorbs water easily and doesn’t clump or go into dust or dry out like some other litters. And buns pee a lot. With wood pellets you can scoop out the wet bits and it keeps it kind of isolated to the spot they peed. Paper pellets are not as good at isolating it, but they clump up and you can scoop out the wet bits still.
