Hi everyone I am new to joining but have browsed the topics looking for help before. I have just successfully bonded my 4 year old neutered rabbit Steve with a “juvenile” spayed female (the shelter didn’t know how old she is). They are living together in Steve’s condo which he used to share with miss bun who sadly passed away about 1 and a half months ago. Steve and Cali are getting along great and seem in love but he has become quite lazy and unmotivated. He still eats and poops fine but mostly he is resting. He’s not the type to race or binky very often but he just seems off. Any ideas of why that could be? I’ve had him for a year and a bit and we’ve never had health issues.

My initial thought he that he’s still mourning the loss of miss bun. A month and a half doesn’t seem like a very long time for him to be over losing a bond-mate and now he’s bonded again which is stressful in a totally different way… it’s probably just really hard on him. As long as he is eating and doing his business then I would just give him some time to adjust and settle back into a routine.

I second what bpash said, he’s probably adjusting to all the change.
If he continues to be lethargic for a while or you feel concerned maybe take him to a vet to check there are no underlying health issues

He could definitely still be grieving the loss of his wife bun.

Have you tried adding new entertaining toys to grab his attention? When he’s lazy does his posture seem “rigid” or sitting funny (like he could be in pain)? Or is he sitting normally, doing flops, ect.

Your bun is also starting to hit an age where he slows down so this could be some of it also. Are you positive he’s four or could he be slightly older, closer to five or six? My four-year old is not four-for-sure which is why I ask. He was a rescue so it’s hard to determine his exact age.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think that makes sense, he’s still adjusting. Thankfully today he seems a bit more perky. He is not hunched and doesn’t look like he’s uncomfortable or in pain. He was a rescue so no he’s not 4 for sure. I buy all kinds of rabbit friendly toys online and they have plenty to chew and do. I guess I’ll just keep an eye on him, I do have a great rabbit savvy vet to take him to if it comes to that.
