I have 2 baby holland lops.  The boy is 16 wks and just got neutered today. Our girl is 14 wks and up until today they have completely loved each other.  They have been together since 6/8 wks of age.  When we brought Butters home Hazel got very upset and started chasing him and sniffing his “area”.  She seems deeply disturbed about this.  We seperated them right away but later put them in their play yard together figuring it was neutral.  They seemed just fine, washing each other and hanging out until…..Hazel sniffed his “area”.  She went nutty and started chasing him.  So now they have seperate cages tonight but I’m worried what may happen from here.  She is getting spayed in 2 wks and has not cycled as of yet.  Has anyone every seen this and is it just temporary or did we break the baby bond they had? Is this just cause he smells different and she is mad?  Will we need to re bond them after this process?  We knew that they’d need to be seperate after her spaying but I thought they’d be find being seperated for a wk at most for healing.  What happened?

        Any input is welcome.

Well, he can still impregnate her for a full month after he’s been neutered, so yes, they will need to remain separate for awhile longer. Once she is spayed, they need to be separated for a full month from that surgery date so she can heal properly and thoroughly. One week healing time will not be long enough. A female spay is an invasive procedure.

He smells different and she is hormonal. I think it’s pretty safe to say that the “Baby bond” is broken at this point. This is to be expected and does not mean they will never bond.

Don’t worry about them right now. Get him healed, get her spayed and healed, and then you can start bonding.
