I took my bunny Dewey into the vet yesterday.  He wasn’t moving. He wasn’t eating. He just wasn’t himself.  The vet took an x-ray which revealed an enlarged stomach and misshapen kidney and some crystals in his bladder.

Today, the vet called and was happy to announce that Dewey was pooping alot.  He believes that Dewey has GI Stasis and Bladder Sludge.  He is concerned about the kidney and believes that is at the bottom of his issues. He described the stasis and bladder sludge as symptoms.  He’d like to do an ultra-sound to really  get a good look at the kidney.

We (my spouse & I) are Dewey’s 3rd owners.  When we adopted him, we were told his age was 3 years, but the rescue said that people sometimes lie about the age of the bunny.  So, by our estimate he could be 8 to 9 years old or perhaps older.  We also know that the rescue had him treated for veneral disease/syphillis.

I don’t know anything about misshapen or scarred kidneys.  I know it is not good, but can I help Dewey’s quality of life with dietary changes? I will talk to my vet, but wanted to know if anyone has any experience or info.

Dewey weighs about 5 lbs and gets two 1/4 cups of ox-bow pellet a day, orchard grass, and veggies twice a day. Wondering if I should make sure he gets low calcium veggies and decrease the pellet?

I recommend you read this link from Dana Krempels that I think will help answer your question:

It can be risky reducing calcium.

It might be possible to have the crystals tested (or any stones)to find out what their make-up is. Then there might be something you can give to lessen the build up in future. (potassium citrate, sodium citrate 2 I know of).

Last week I was reading this myself. Use of magnesium to reduce sludge.

It is possible Dewey is the age you originally thought and his misshapen kidney is congenital or result of a condition.

I hope your vet is able to determine the reason.
