So I am planning on getting my mini lop neutered next month. He is about 8 months old and was been starting to have some undisirable behaviours. (spraying and humping). I am a little uneasy with getting him neutered because (other than it being a surgery)  he is such a cuddy friendly bunny. He acctually likes being picked up and purrs and falls asleep when I do.. I let him out in the backyard and he will run around my feet when he wants to play. When we are outside he follows me and my family. I understand that this is what is best for him but my question is:

if you did have a very friendly bunny before neutering did it change at all after?
and did the spraying and humping completely stop?

        Thank you!

I can answer this a little because I just got my 7 month old male dwarf lop neutered two weeks ago. He was very affectionate before the surgery and always begged to be cuddled. I was nervous exactly like you. He wasn’t spraying but the humping was completely out of control! The first week after the surgery he was completely crazy and i thought i had made a big mistake! But now he is amazing, maybe even more affectionate than before. He used to hump anything that smelled like me but now he’s taken to licking anything that smells like me instead. The humping is 95% gone but I’ve been told the hormonal behaviours can continue for about a month after surgery. Overall he seems so happy now and even though I was stressed beyond belief for a few days it was totally worth it!

Thank you so much for your reply! definitely puts my mind more at ease.. How were his litter habits after? Right now Roo is probably 80% trained.. he usually uses his litter box.. Always pees in it but has a lot of poos outside of it around his enclosure (proabably around 15ish everyday) . I am really hoping that his liter habits will improve so that he can spend for time around the family.

That sounds similar to Rufus. When he was really young he had perfect litter box habits. Then, as he matured, he started pooing around his cage more but always peeing in the litterbox. He never ever goes outside the cage though so it’s generally really easy. Since the neutering, he is definitely better but not quite back to perfect again. It’s only been two weeks though so not an issue. I made sure I kept the cage extremely clean in the few days after surgery but he was so hyper he kept trying to tip his litterbox over and lie in it! I was panicing that he’d get an infection but I took him back to the vet a week ago and she declared him recovered so that was a big relief. As I write this he’s flopped out next to me having a nap in his new x-pen. I would reccommend having an x-pen or something that he cans afely burn off some energy in for the post-neuter crazies because he used to be free roam around our loungeroom but he became much more destructive for a few days and he was jumping onto and off of really high things. An x-pen keeps him a bit safer!

My bunny Bam is just as, or even more, cuddly than before his neuter about 6 months ago. His unwanted behaviours stopped completely about a month after his surgery (before the neutering he was courting the dog intensely, all the time and pee-marked the places she usually rests in, like the sofa and her bed in the hallway) and his litterbox-habits improved.

Having him neutered was a great success, to say the least.
Best of luck with your little boy!

Buttons became more friendly after neutering as he wasn’t driven crazy by hormones! He’s much calmer now and I never look back after neutering!

I didn’t notice any change in personality when I neutered my boys other than the humping subsiding. Their friendliness towards me didn’t change at all.

I’d say over 94% of the time humping stops and under 4% have a complete personality change.

I have a friend who has a ‘special’ rabbit, he is neutered but he still likes to hump things. However, not all was in vain! He used to be aggressive and bite everything and now he just licks and humps things! XD

Just think of it, I have a grandma who had surgery and she came out the same person (Healthier but the same) So I wouldn’t worry, it is so unlikely that he will turn into bunzilla that it’s not even worth considering.

                      Good luck!

My cuddle bun Bromley was neutered 3 weeks ago. In the first week or two, his hormones will be crazy and he you might start worrying about a personality change (Bromley started growling at me), don’t worry though, it will be temporary. After about 2 weeks Brom was back to napping on my lap and cuddling in the crook of my neck for hours at a time!

My other advice is to watch the incision carefully! Bromley blew the incision twice but still healed perfectly after the third vet visit.
