I am new to bunny owning. My bunny makes a mess of his cage and sends bedding flying everywhere and all over the floors. I read that instead of bedding you can use a blanket or a towel. But my bunny isn’t potty trained. If I use a blanket and clean in every 2 days will that be okay? I will try to litter box train him. Please please please reply to this!

          Hello!

Yes, I too as a bunny owner fell prey to giving my bun loose bedding, I’n my opinion, It isn’t a good Idea. It creates more dust and bunnies love amusing themselves by shoving it through the cage bars.

I think a towel is a great Idea! That is what I use for Muffin! He still poops on it occasionally (Usually cecals Ewww) but I change it every 2 days or when it is all poopy and gross.

          Good luck in litter-box training!

Do you think I can use a towel now even though he isn’t potty trained? He is making such a mess!

I believe that you could, I did since Muffin thought his bedding was litter, if you are uncomfortable with washing soiled towels it might not be best for you, but It saves you more money than buying new bedding.

Nothing soft should be in the cage during the litter training process. That seems to give people the best results. If the only soft stuff around is what is in the litter box, then they will pick that as the most desirable place to go. If you have “bedding” all over the cage, then they get confused. I would hold off on a towel or blanket until after they are litter trained. A smooth hard surface is actually desirable by many buns as lounging area. Some buns will even move a towel or blanket out of the way so they can lay on the hard surface.

I diddo LBJs advice Once they are litter box trained you can add a blanket but honestly, mine prefer the cool floor to the rug I have in their cage

Oh sorry, I didn’t know that, I guess I don’t need to change anything (Muffin Is Litter trained) but now I know! Thanks

When I am litter training a bun they have to have bare floors until they are trained. Now that Brom is litter trained I do put a little bit of bedding and a towel in his cage because he likes to dig around in it and it makes him happy. But the bedding and the litter are very different materials so he knows the difference. For example you could use wood pellets as litter and Carefresh on the rest of the cage.

If at some point you do decide to put a towel or blanket in the cage, make sure that you check to see if your bunny is chewing on it. You don’t want him to be ingesting cloth fibers.

I already have blankets in the cage. He seems okay with it. He doesn’t chew. I don’t know if I will litter train him now.

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t litter train your rabbit. It will really make cage clean up a lot easier and it’s more hygienic for your rabbit.

As everyone else said, removing the bedding/towels/blankets until your bunny gains litter habits is pretty standard. It’s not going to hurt your bunny not to have bedding/blanket/towels until that point.

Litter training is usually pretty simple. Your bunny will pick a spot they like to potty the most and you place a litter box in that spot. Soak up any accidents with a paper towel and place them in the litter box, same with stray poo.
