Hi! My name is Aislinn, and I’m a stay-at-home mom to 3 two-legged kids and 5 four-legged ones! 

My bun is McGee, named after my favorite character from “NCIS”. He’s a broken black mini Rex who was an awesome personality! He’s just under 8 months old, and it’s taken a while for him to really adapt to our household, but now he thinks he rules the roost! 

We have 2 cats, Macavity and Crystal, and McGee loves to chase them around the living room whenever he’s out. Mac is almost 3 times McGee’s size, but he’s still asserted his dominance over the cat! If Mac ticks him off, he’ll wait until he’s turned around then goes up and gooses him in the rear end! He also chases Crystal, who is only a couple of pounds heavier than him. She usually just runs and finds a place where he can’t get to her.

We also have 2 dogs, Buddy and Star, who are both lab mixes. Buddy is a lab/shepard mix and Star is a lab/mastiff mix. The dogs aren’t allowed in the room w/ the bun because even though Star is pretty laid-back most of the time, she sees the rabbit and immediately goes into “hunter” mode.

My 2-legged kids are ages 14, 12, and 9, so this year they’re all in different schools! 

I’m glad I found this website and these forums because I love talking about my babies, both furry and non-furry!

I think he’s pretty cute, too

I think McGee has some of the funniest personality quirks, some of which are not “typical” of a rabbit. While most rabbits are most active during early morning and evening hours, McGee prefers to be out ALL the time! He actually knows when it’s “bedtime” (around 10:30 PM, when the rest of us are getting ready for bed) and he’s happy to go into his cage for the night. All I have to do is call out “Bedtime! Who want’s a bedtime cookie!” and he goes running to his cage! His “bedtime cookie” is a bunny treat that’s made from oats, carrots, and spinach greens, all baked together (get them at PetSmart). He only gets one per day, and it’s at bedtime. It’s actually right at noon here, and though that’s the “normal” time for rabbits to be napping/resting, he’s out and running around the living room, chasing the cats, and making burrows out of the blankets we put on the floor. He’ll go through cycles of running around and playing, pancaking on a cool spot on the floor, and going to his cage for food/water/potty.

We’re pretty lucky that we (meaning me and the bunny) have figured out his potty habits. He HATES any kind of wood shavings for a potty, and doesn’t even want them in his cage at all! He prefers to lie directly on the floor of his cage. And we have a corner litter box inside his cage that is in a rectangular plastic storage box, so we put Yesterday’s News cat litter in the potty, cover it with hay, and put hay all around him in the box. That way he can do what buns in the wild do naturally: eat and use the bathroom at the same time. Since he’s told us exactly where he wants his potty to be (as opposed to using it where WE put it!) he doesn’t pee or poop outside of his litter box at all! This was a big surprise to us, since previous buns we’ve had would do what I thought was pretty common: let poops out while they’re running around (with the exception of cecotropes). But he hasn’t done that! He’s a great little guy!

BTW, I wanted to tell y’all about Yesterday’s News cat litter. It’s made from recycled and compressed newspapers, has no dust, and it’s completely safe for buns! It is kind of expensive, which is why we don’t use it in the 3 litter boxes for our cats, but since we only need a couple of small scoops to cover the bottom of the potty, it lasts a long time! And since it’s not treated with chemicals, even buns can eat it and not have problems! (Since they eat paper and cardboard, anyway!) Not trying to be a commercial, but I know that some buns are sensitive to the litter/shavings/other stuff used in their potties since their little noses are right down in it.

Hmm – whats the name of the treat?? I typically buy the Nibble Rings from Pet Smart!! Maybe I’ll try out this new one you have.

I have always heard good things about Yesterdays News also! Personally, we use CareFresh over here!

It’s called “All Living Things Garden Mini Wafer Snacks”. They’re about the only thing I can find that doesn’t have a lot of fruits, nuts, seeds, or other sugary and fatty things that can shorten a rabbit’s lifespan. I’ve also dabbled with making my own from all that leftover hay and powdered pellets left at the bottom of the bags (stuff too small to give him because he can’t eat it or it can get up his nose and in his sinuses). That hasn’t worked out very well YET(!) but I’m working on it

Hi Aislinn, welcome! I too am new to this forum and am glad to have found it. I agree with tanlover, please let us know if the treat-making ever becomes a success, I’d love to make my own as well. McGee is really beautiful!
