my cutie sleeps in a cage at night and during the days i let him roam freely. i want to let him roam freely at night too but only if he is litter trained to go back into his cage when he has to go. whats the best way to do this? ive tried moving his poop there, doesnt change anything and its been a few weeks now

Mimosa took less than a week before he was litterbox trained. I had a litterbox in his cage and outside his cage. I kept him in an xpen and constantly scooped poop up until he figured out where he had to go. I slowly expanded his space, and if he got lazy with litterbox habits, I decreased how much space he had. As his space got bigger, I added a few more litterboxes. Now one month later he runs all over my room, the stairs, and two hallways, but always goes back to the closest litterbox to do his business.

So I guess, maybe try slowly expanding your bun’s space until he masters it, and as that space increases, add multiple litterboxes in different locations. Hope this helps

During the night, when he is in his cage, does he consistently use the litter box? What is his litter box set-up?

            Also, is he neutered?

When my bunny started being free range around the house (much sooner than I had planned since she was a super small baby and was constantly breaking out of her cage) I did like Mimosa and left litter boxes everywhere. I think I had 4 around my living room. I always cleaned up her messes and put it in the nearest litter box. If I caught her about to go I would usher her towards a box and if she was using the box by herself I would give her a treat when she was done. It took about a week before she really caught on. Once she was consistent I slowly started removing boxes until she was down to just one. I just kind of paid attention to which box she preferred and tried to make the box I wanted her to use look more appealing by putting her favorite kind of hay in there and cleaning it out more frequently. Once I kind of got her out of the habit of using a particular box I just took it away. Now she only using one which is in her cage area and she hasn’t had an accident in ages. Patiences and consistency are key.

Wow very inspiring ! Ok so I need to keep at it with consistently relocating his poop and I should definitely set up more spots. The litter box I’ve been making for him has just been newspaper and scented hay, and he almost always uses it during the night but there are a couple accidents every once in a while. I am thinking of looking into something more natural than the newspaper. What do you guys use for your litter boxes?

You also need to clean with vinegar to get rid of the scent if he goes outside the box! Forgot to mention that.

I use wood pellet cat litter and a medium sized cat litter box and my bunny is a dwarf so only about 3 pounds or so. If you look around on the site you can find lots of information on different types of litter and box ideas too.

so its been about a month and i decided to try something a little different instead of leaving newspaper and hay everywhere. i spoke to the guy who clips junior’s nails at the pet store and he said to try using a patch of grass as a “litter box” that rabbits are attracted to natural grass. so i bought a freshpatch off amazon and i left it in the living room with him during free time nad he seems to love it! he goes to the bathroom on it, but he also hangs out there afterwards lol
