I found a large dog kennel at a thrift store for a great price, now I just need to turn it into a fun comfy habitat for my 7 month old bunny. I want to make sure it’s filled with enriching toys and activities so he won’t be bored or lonely while I’m gone. I’m not sure where to start because even though I’ve had him since he was a baby, I’m still not entirely sure how he likes to play. He likes to run, jump, chew and shred things, and chase and be chased but he’s never shown any interest in toys. Unless you count throwing his food bowl and overturning his water bowl. Anyways this kennel is great Dane or mastiff sized so there’s a lot of vertical room that’s not being utilized. Any ideas?

How big is the dog crate?

The minimum recommended size cage for a single small – medium rabbits is 4′ X 2′ or 8 sq ft.

If he likes to toss things around then some stacking cups, baby keys, and interlocking rings might be fun for him. These are all plastic baby toys and you do have to make sure he doesn’t chew them too much. My bunnies are HUGE chewers but they don’t chew their plastic toys at all funnily enough.

Please post pics after you create your bunny house as I’ve been toying with the idea of attaching an XL dog crate to our xpen!

I posted pics of what I did in this section under topic titled
              “Bi-level condo from dog crate”

I deleted the pics or I would have posted here

[EDITED BY RABBITPAM] I am adding the link to the post so you can get to it easily. It’s back a few pages now, but worth a look.

The crate is 44″ deep, 30″ wide and 30″ tall. He’s pretty small though. I thought he was a dwarf rabbit when I got him, but he’s gotten a bit too big to be pure dwarf. He’s definitely still a small bunny. I will definitely try the stacking cups and rings, though I’m not sure if he’s throwing his bowls for fun or to be a mischievous little brat I normally come home to find them upside down and strewn across the cage.

I thought of getting some plastic storage containers and cutting holes in them to double as levels, tunnels and hidey holes. But Would the plastic be harmful to him if he chewed it? I also saw a rabbit hammock at the pet store, has anyone tried these?

Thanks for all the feedback! I’d love to hear more ideas!

I like the bi-level condo made with the chain and platform (CheriB). I was thinking of buying a large dog crate off Craigslist to make a multi-level home for Posey. I’d probably use chains. zip tiesp and metal hooks as reinforcements for things inside the crate. Right now Posey is in 2 Marchioro cages side by side with the small walls off. She hops around her house fine, but I think she looks cramped. My boyfriend thinks it’s similar to her tunneling in the wild. She has moved her litter box, hay box and bedroom into the center of the space so she can run circles. Either way, if she can have more space I’d like her to have it.
