Ty has been grooming A LOT lately, and scratched his ears a bunch of times.

I’m starting to think that he has mites, but I don’t know if I should check his body, because he has ony been at my house for 2 days and they say that you’re not supposed to touch your bunny until at lease a week or something if you want to have a good relationship?

So should I check now, or should I check a week later? And is his behavior normal (grooming and scratching a lot)?

Also when I went to pick him up, I forgot to check his teeth, so I am kinda worried about him having malocclusion or other dental problems.

I’ve never heard of such a thing.

I would say however that you will need a vet to check for mites and to check his teeth as well. Mites and malocclusion won’t be something you can detect yourself.

How serious is malocclusion and how long does it take to really notice? My parents don’t want to take him in to the vets because of the cost. Do you think that if he does have malocclusion and/or mites, can he wait until he is neutered (in about 2 months)?

I may be an over-the-top worrier, but this is my first bunny and I don’t want anything to go wrong.

When I said “When I went to pick him up” I meant pick him up from the breeder’s home.

New bunnies need an initial vet visit when you bring them home to make sure they are healthy, so he will have to have a vet exam before the neuter. A vet would not do any procedure on a rabbit without having seen him first. Because of this, I’m a little confused by your wanting to wait until the neuter. Can you clarify what you mean?

I think that some vets do a check up just before they neuter the rabbit? So then maybe I could wait till the neuter. Also, I don’t know about mites, but I am now pretty sure he doesn’t have malocclusion because he doesn’t show any signs of it, discharge from eyes/nose, grinding his teeth, etc.

I’m still confused…. “Before the neuter” as in one to two weeks before? Yes, they can do that. An initial exam immediately prior to the neuter (ten-twenty minutes before they put the rabbit under), I’ve never heard of that.

Do you have an exam appt set-up for him yet before the neuter?

No I don’t have any appointments for him yet (also, he’s only 2 months old, way too young to be neutered) but some people say that the vets (maybe depending on which vet) does an overall check on the body minutes before the rabbit gets spayed/neutered.

Anyways, just wondering, rabbit groom a lot, right?

Also sometimes Ty will run around (in his freetime) then stop and will shake his ears a bit and groom it and then he will dash. Do you think he has mites? I checked his ears, they seem clean, but is this normal behavior?

Mites aren’t usually visible to the naked eye.

I personally would be weary of using any vet that does not want to do a preliminary exam. That would be a big red flag to me. I’m not saying there are not vets that may operate that way, but I would not be comfortable with that.

So in closing, our suggestion is that you set up an appt for him. As his owner, it is up to you to decide when this will be. There isn’t really anything else we can advise you to do at this point.

Felix was doing the same thing. Turned out he had fleas. (we went to the in-laws and their dogs are covered). I got a kitten flea treatment and put just half a dose on. I had to make sure he wouldn’t lick it off, but it worked. I got a flea comb as well. Now he only has one stubborn flea that I have been chasing, but he stopped glooming/itching so much.

Beka: My vet examined our boys the day they got neutered. We brought them in very early – he examined them while we were there – and then took them for the procedure. And we selected him from the HRS list of recommended vets in our area. We used the questions recommended by HRS to interview different vets over the phone – and selected him because he seemed very knowledgeable.

Thank you for sharing your experience Baxter! Did you have a health concern with either of them that day? I think since the original poster has a concern that will likely require treatment, an appt prior to surgery is a good idea.

                                      Hey guys!

This is or rather was craycrayaboutanimals. I forgot my password and they never send me an email, so I had to make a new account. Anyways, the vet says Ty has fleas but other than that, he was in perfect health!

That’s great news! And craycray – the same thing happened to me, where I couldn’t log back in, and was never sent my password – so I also created a new profile. I used to be Baxter n Boo – now I’m Baxter n Boo’s mom 🙂

Thanks for the update! I’m glad it was something relatively minor!

I sent an alert to BB regarding both of your accounts (craycray and Baxter). She should be able to get you back into the original ones. She’s been out for the past couple weeks so that might be why this wasn’t fixed before.
