I just got this really good idea for a neat rabbit toy! I am posting this to make sure it is safe for bunnies. I had the idea of installing a toiletpaper holder type of thing, (the thing that spins so you can get toilet paper, I don’t know what it’s called) on a wall in my bunnies enclosure. Then, with supervision, because this could make a mess, put a toilet paper roll on the “dispenser” and let the buns stand up on their hind legs to roll the toilet paper out and they can then shred it. I don’t know which type of toilet paper i would get though. Have any suggestions or thoughts on this “invention”? (if someone hasn’t thought of it yet, haha)

I wouldn’t let them shred the toilet paper – first of all because that is an expensive toy – just give them the roll part not the paper part and stuff it with hay for them to play with.

I don’t think regular toilet paper would be safe except maybe those toilet paper that’s more like paper. Think it’d also unroll really fast.

If you really want to stick with this idea though, maybe try getting really long paper and cutting it into strips. Then, attached it to the roll and roll it up. This way you don’t waste toilet paper and can reuse if it isn’t all torn or can just replace the strips that are torn.

I think it’s really not the best idea and it will be quite messy. Also some rabbits like to eat paper. I think there are better toys that are less wasteful too than toilet paper…

I love the idea of the holder on the wall! I hang toys from the wall of the cage while I’m at work to keep Brom from getting bored. Wood chews, rope toys. etc. but he usually chews through the string. I might try this but put plastic rings with bells and stuff on the holder instead of the tp. That way he can box them, make them spin, and tug at them.

I wouldn’t recommend it. I once left kitchen roll on its holder on the floor while I cleaned their play area and found Suri munching on the paper towels. This isn’t good for bunnies!
I do like the idea of unravelling things though! Maybe wrap newspaper around it or something safe if they do decide to have munch?

It could be a really cheap paper that you… didn’t enjoy.

I didnt neccisarily say it had to be toilet paper. Also, you’d think newspaper would be bad for the bunnies because of the ink in it. It could cause cancer.

Newspaper is okay for buns but it really depends on what type of ink is used. Most newspapers are made with soy based ink, so its okay. I wouldn’t give buns the glossy pages, though.

Nibbles sisal is a type of hemp like string. I believe you can pick some up from your local craft store. Just make sure it is untreated.

If you guys like the idea of a rolling play toy. I found this on BunnyApproved.com

and if you’re worried about eating paper, how would a phone book be any different???

It mainly has to do with the make up of the paper and the ink that is on it. Soy based ink is used on newspaper and phone books. Except we don’t give the glossy pages to the buns because they use a different sort of ink. I believe (someone can correct me) the main concern with toilet paper is the chemicals that are used in toilet paper to make the substance. I, also, just worry about a chocking hazard because of how soft toilet paper is. I worry they are going to eat it and chock on it because it wets so fast.

I think the concern with toilet paper is its texture is completely different. It’s more absorbent and if they do decide to eat or chew on it it is more likely the bun can choke on it or something because the toilet paper will absorb all the saliva the bun produces and it won’t go down as easily.

I do like where you are going though with the idea of the toy. Maybe a different kind of paper on the roll itself other than toilet paper.

newspapers are safe if the ink used on them is non toxic
the reason i wouldnt recomment toilet paper is its texture is different and as NBO said they can choke and it clumps together so I would be concerned about it blocking up a bunnies tummy. I also read about someone who ate toilet paper once (who knows why) but it had a serious affect on their stomach therefore i would be very wary of using it as a rabbit toy as their digestive systems are much more sensitive that humans x
