This is quite a long story but I will keep it as short as I can without leaving out important info. We REALLY need opinions and ideas and just help. So about a week ago the bug guy spooked our rabbit he was outside and popped out of nowhere to spray the outside of a window the bunny is right next to in a pen. Its a pen with linolium tiles on the floor and the metal office cubes and its all zip tied together etc. Well its pretty slippery and he got so spooked he SOMEHOW got his foot (really just one toe) caught in between the metal cube and the floor….its really tight. We were both upstairs when we heard him get spooked so we ran down and by time we got downstairs he got his foot unstuck but there was a little blood and it didnt look good. My wife picked him up, she had blood on her shirt and we immediately brought him to the vet which is luckily just a few minutes away.

They said he needed surgery he basically had no skin left on the toe and it was just all pulled back and just muscle and tendon and bone showing. They did the surgery and put a bandage on his foot and duct tape all around it etc. He is on pain meds and antibiotics and everything was ok for the first day or two then he started eating away at the tape. They said he might do that but just to re tape it. So we did, and he bit through it again, and again, and again. And he began biting through the first bandage, then the second bandage. The problem here is right around his toe is a secure bandage with some cream or liquid that helps grow their skin back (I forget the exact name) and if he bites through that he will be at his toe with no skin on it, they are afraid he will bite into his toe which is just tedon and muscle right now etc, and the stuff on his toe will take 4-8 WEEEEEEEKS to grow back, if it even does fully grow back.

So basically he is eating tape on a daily basis and bandage etc, hes always eaten everything he wasnt supposed to, for the two years we’ve had him. Logically we called the vet and said this isnt good etc and they saw him and re bandaged him and re taped him and decided he would need a cone around his head, for 4-8 weeks. I was skeptical, how is he supposed to live with a cone on his head for 2 months……well we show up and its a soft cone, not a hard plastic one. He chewed right threw it. When they showed us the cone we knew it wouldnt work but we took and payed for it anyways just hoping it might, but he ate parts of it and we took it off.

Now I’m here and lost. We haven’t called back the vet this cone thing all just happened today, like 30 mins ago. What the heck do we do. There is no vet within 50+ miles of us that is good with bunnies. We live in Palm City FL 34990, in case any1 knows of a good place for a second opinion or can find 1. The vet we go to has great reviews, we dont really like the customer service but the main vet lady that does the surgeries and stuff is nice and seems to know what shes doing, the rest of the staff, who we mostly deal with, isnt as pleasent. They basically told us if he cant keep this toe protected for 4-8 weeks so the skin can grow back that the only option would be to amputate it. It’s his biggest toe. I asked if he would walk and hop around normal after he healed from his toe being cut off and she was like ‘I think so”, answers like that scare us. Shes like the top exotic vet around and she doesnt know how he will be affected? What if they do cut his toe off and hes all off balance and cant walk or something? Please help.

Oh poor rabbit – I wonder if he also bites because he has nerve damage and cannot feel his toe. Which toe is it by the way – maybe you mentioned but I don’t see it – is it a back toe?

oops sorry yes back right foot his longest toe, 3rd or 4th toe on the foot

And he doesnt actually bite his toe or at least hasnt gotten there. He just bites and eats the duct tape and bandages leading up to his toe

Here’s a list from House Rabbit Society for vets – maybe one of the FL vets is close to you that is recommended:

              rabbit.org/vet-listings/

I can understand why you might not feel confident about her answer about his mobility issues but it sounds like she’s being honest and while he most likely would be able to, no vet could probably tell you a definite answer.  I’ve only dealt with a total back leg amputation and I know those rabbits can get around just fine.  Not certain about the toe though.

Maybe someone else with experience in that regards will chime in.
