My two bunnies spend most of their time in an X-pen with a plastic floor mat to protect the hardwood. A fair number of poos and bits of hay end up outside the pen, and my husband and I are tired of sweeping them up every day and stepping on them. Also, our lionhead Benedict likes to butt his head into the pen, pushing it past the plastic mat.

I was thinking of building some sort of frame out of 2x4s to go around the bottom of the pen. That way it would keep the pen in place and reduce the number of poos that get flung out of the pen. Would that work? How would I be able to open the pen for playtime–just make the frame 3-sided? Have you combatted either of these issues (the poo flinging and the cage pushing) and won?

I have bases/frames for my X Pens and they worked great. My pens don’t really have doors so I would just open on panel inward but you could also cut the wood so that the is able to be opened. Basically, measure the door and leave a empty spot in the frame.

I’ve been fighting that battle for two years and still lose. Someone once told me that the goal of bunnies and their potty is 100% of pee in the liter box, and 90% of the poo. Bunnies tend to kick and hop their poos and hay out. You could try the frame and see if it works, but I think it’s also one of the typical things you have to deal with as a bunny parent. Some people also use a grid over top their liter box but I dont know how well those work

I have the same problem with my bunny I used pieces of cardboard and attached them with zip ties to the outside of her cage and it did the trick. Plus I had tons of cardboard laying around the house so it didn’t cost me nothing.

Sometimes, poo is actually all in the litter box but because how they hop in and out of the litter, the poo comes flying out. You could try a higher walled litter box and cut an entrance/exit on one side and see if that helps.
In MD’s pic, you can make one of the sides hinged so you can still open and close the x-pen door.

I love the frame idea and asked my husband to do this once we move and house them together
