My son’s bunny, Dig dug began twirling around my hand this past week. What I mean is, I would reach in to pet her and at first

she stays real still then she will begin looking back wherever my hand goes and if my hand went to far down near her rump, she

would entirely “twirl” around over and over and over. The first time or two, I joked that it was

how to keep a bunny busy for hours but this Thursday, she somehow flipped around and got my hand

between her front paws and began humping it! She also tries to make a tiny little nibble/bite.  Are

these the beginning behaviors of puberty even for a female or do I have a male on my hands afterall?

No way to really tell gender without taking him/her to the vet (or looking for testicles). I think females usually start puberty at 4-6 months but I’ve had a bunny go through it as early as 3 (3 1/2 ish).

Anyway, sounds like the start of puberty. Females and males both hump it’s a rabbit way of establishing dominance. My spayed female humped one of my male bunnies back when I was bonding them as a pair.

            Hi!

I’m pretty confident you’ve got a girl here – in my experience boys entering puberty aren’t quite as ‘forward’ as the girls.

Definitely puberty though! Time to look at getting bun neutered! Neutering is best done early as as all the skin toughens as they get older making the procedure more difficult for the vet, more sore for the bun, and more difficult recovery!

            Good luck!
