And I’m not talking about the classic binky.

I recently noticed my rabbit Bean’s head shakes rapidly when he’s lying down. He doesn’t seem to be in any sort of pain and he’s eating, drinking, and pooping properly.

Can anyone lend any insight into this behavior and whether or not I should be worried?

We would definitely need more info. My first thought was a seizure/convulsions. I can’t imagine what rapid head shaking would look like on a rabbit that is laying down…. That really doesn’t sound good tho.

Is it head shaking? Or is his head sort of vibrating? Sometimes when Leopold is breathing a little harder his head moves with it. It is a subtle movement, but my husband jokes and says he’s “rocking”.

Have you checked his ears? I don’t know about buns, but I know dogs & cats shake their heads when they have ear infections… Just a thought…

He’s not shaking his head in a side to side motion, it’s more like his entire head seems to be vibrating. The rest of his body is still. He doesn’t seem to be bothered by this at all. He’s not grinding his teeth. I suspect that it might be because he’s breathing harder, but I can’t imagine why (maybe the heat?). It only happens when he’s lying down.

If he is more relaxed when he is laying down, then his head might be “looser”. So if he is breathing a little harder then his head might move with it a bit. Leopold usually does this when he is laying down, but it can happen when he’s sitting upright. It is just him breathing a little harder. And yes, it is usually because he’s feeling a bit warm. Sometimes he will get all worked up playing and then he will rest for a bit because he feels warm.

I’ve been keeping a pretty close eye on Bean these last few days and he seems to only exhibit this behavior at night. Otherwise he seems perfectly content and happy. Regardless, he has a vet appointment for Monday so I can get clarification then. Thanks for your comments!

Someone just messaged me about their bun shaking his head a few days ago. I told her to take him to the vet as he has never exhibited this behavior before. Luckily she did – the vet said he had an ear infection and she got lucky and caught it early.

Hope Bean is ok. My bunny was doing a little bit of shaking and I took to the vet just in case. He said she was fine but had a lot of wax in her ears. Nothing abnormal but in the heat it seemed to be itching her perhaps. He gave me some ear wash (trying to get that in was interesting) and she’s fine. Sure yours will be fine too probably nothing but I know I felt much better having it checked.

I would have a vet check your bun. Any new or abnormal behavior is cause for concern.
