Our rabbit uses her litter box in general, but after it is cleaned out, she urinates on the floor next to it for a while.  We’ve tried putting some of the soiled contents in the new litter, but she still does it for several days to a couple of weeks.  We’ve tried different litter types, but no dice.  They are complex critters but we don’t seem to see any reason why she does this for a while and then starts using the litter box again.  Any help or ideas would be appreciated.  Thx.

Do you use something to clean the box itself?
Maybe try only changing the litter and not using anything to wipe down/ disinfect the box.

Is it a fairly new behavior for her or is it something she’s always done?

My bunny “Baby” did something kind of similar (She’s been a tough one with the litter training).. this is gross, but I got so sick of taking vinegar to the floor next to it, the last time I just didnt, then I put an even bigger litter box over the whole spot. I figured she’d recognize the smell, and she’d see a big litter box over it, maybe she’ll get the hint.

Mine do this too – so I leave plenty of droppings and some urine in the boxes when they are cleaned and put hay into them. It doesn’t keep them perfectly in the boxes after a cleaning, but it helps.

Not typically.  Sometimes yes, but it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

She’s done it for over a year (she’s about 2.5).  She didn’t do this when we had her in a hallway, but she started this when we moved her to the laundry room.   We’ve tried different litter types without much success.  It doesn’t seem to be a common problem, so maybe we have to just keep tweaking her environment.

                    Thx.
