        Can someone please help me?

I’m wondering how large a house my new buns will need.

One is an American fuzzy lop (about 4 lbs.) and the other is a 2 lb. Netherland Dwarf.

I am considering both the x-pen and the NIC cube options. Both have advantages and I’m sure, disadvantages (and if you can think of some for either option, please do let me know).

The thing is, I’m getting all sorts of info off the Internet regarding the size and space rabbits need. I found a Dutch site that made it sound that unless you’re gonna turn over half a room to rabbits, you shouldn’t have any! I’ve also seen “3 x the size of the rabbit” and “6 x the size of the rabbit.”

I’m getting really confused. I do have some leeway in where I can set this house up, but I really can’t devote half a room to it!

        Please help!

        Thank you!

I always refer to the House Rabbit Society – here is what they suggest:

          What size housing is best?

Bigger is better! A rabbit’s home should be at least 4-6 times the size of your bunny when he’s entirely stretched out–more if he is confined for a large amount of the day. Enclosure sizes also should be decided in conjunction with the amount of exercise time and space the rabbit has. One guideline to go by is at least 8 square feet of enclosure time combined with at least at least 24 square feet of exercise space, for 1-2 rabbits, in which the rabbit(s) can run and play at least 5 hours per day. You can build or buy your rabbit a two-story “condo” with the floors connected by a ramp–they love this! For ideas on where to buy different housing options, visit here.

Here is a link to the website on housing:

Thank you very much for the info and link!

I am sure the exercise area meets those standards. I’m having a little trouble with the math part of figure out how big a condo would have to be to get that square footage for housing 1-2 buns. I’m kinda math challenged, and I know they come in different sizes.

Anyone have a favorite NIC brand they would like to recommend? I’d prefer not to have any kind of “coating” on the bars because the bunnies might chew it off. I have had rats completely chew the paint off their cage bars.

I kind of think they are all coated and you really don’t need to worry about the chewing the coating off – I’ve never heard of this being a problem. I think the most popular is Whitmor and if you google it you should be able to find it.

The minimum size for 2 bunnies would be a 4×4 foot space, not counting levels.
