This is pretty random, but can bunnies climb stairs? If they can, SHOULD they??

I have a split staircase half carpeted and half not. My rabbit is a small one (3 lbs); he will climb the carpeted part to explore, but will not climb the non-carpeted part. He seems comfortable going up and down .

For some reason, our bunnies fear the stairs – and choose to avoid them, which is fine with me, as most of my shoes are downstairs, and I don’t want them chewed up. Baxter already got to my Ralph Lauren boots! Ugh.

My bun loves the stairs. They are carpeted so it’s easy for her to run on and she just loves to sprint up and down them. I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t use stairs…? As long as the stairs are a material that gives them good traction so there isn’t a risk of them sliding/falling and possibly injuring themselves.

I have carpeted stairs and they have been no problem for any of my rabbits – my current Netherland 1.5 pounds zips up and down them all the time – it’s good exercise. Not sure how well they would do on uncarpeted though…

Both my current bunnies will not attempt the stairs. My Mini-Rex used to love zooming up and down them. It was really cute. He was much more adventurous than my current two. Our stairs are not carpeted but some of them have rubber mats tacked in place.

We have hardwood stairs. One of our bunnies (Oliver, the Holland lop) is all about the stairs. He doesn’t go up or down them very quickly, since they’re more slippery than carpet, but he’ll always go up and down them if they’re accessible during playtime.

Our other bunny (Benedict the lionhead) has gone up the stairs once or twice, but it’s not his thing.

My white dwarf had no issue using the stairs (carpeted). She mainly traveled upstairs to see if anyone brought food up there. A word of caution though, if something spooks them and they bolt for the stairs they might trip. One time my mom went to vacuum an upstairs bedroom but didn’t know the rabbit was up there as well. When the vacuum turned on it spooked her and she took a tumble down a few steps. Luckily she came out of the fall okay but it did give us a fright.

We had to teach our bunny to use the stairs as we wanted her to have the run of the house when we were home but she didn’t show any interest in them at first.  Once she’d cracked it she loved them. We got a solid box that made the jump smaller and put that at the side of each step so she did two little jumps each time. We used pellets to tempt her down one at a time. Does that make sense? She did a lot of one step down, two steps back up but never needed the box more than the first time. Once she’d done the whole flight once she was fine. The stairs are also her favourite place to sit and flop now. I think because it’s half way between us if we are up or downstairs so she feels close to us wherever we are.

My bunnies were terrified of the stairs at first. But after Femto got used to them, Fermata ventured up too. Occasionally I wouldn’t be able to find them (they are free range) and they were always lounging on the steps just like that picture! Then I started remodeling and after I took the carpeting off they became scared of them again. Well, that is until one night that I woke up to a light thumping underneath my bed… Femto ventured upstairs again and was exploring my bedroom. So I had to reinstall the baby gate. (hate those things).

My sister says her bun has taken over the stairs. He won’t allow anything on them either, she has a pic of him looking innocent after pushing over a broom she had leaning against the side of the stairs. I should have her post it, lol.

We have wood stairs. I had to teach Joshua how to use them, but now he just goes up and down whenever he’s out. Toshi learned on his own and is super speedy when he uses them

Alvin loves the stairs! My room is on the third floor, and there is another flight of stairs leading up to the roof. We rarely ever need to go up there so Alvin has claimed them as his own. They are a tile and he has no trouble racing up and down them and loves to flop on them. It gets really warm here even with the air conditioning going so I guess the tile just feels really good to him.

And here’s the photo my sister (ninjabun) was referring to. I had leaned a broom against the railing and Alvin took offense at that and knocked it over, startling me. I turned and he was just giving me a “look” that I managed to get a photo of. So naughty but oh so cute!
