We came downstairs this morning to find blood all over the inside of the Maze Haven. It was like something from Dexter

I traced it to Otto’s front right paw. I couldn’t get a super good look through the fur and he was touchy about me handling it, but it looks like he somehow ripped his outside nail. He’s not bleeding anymore, and spent the morning eating breakfast and hay, so he’s ok. He hops, but when he stops moving he holds up that foot. I didn’t put anything on it because he was cleaning it and would’ve licked it off anyway.

Is there anything else I should do? I’ll probably call the vet, but it doesn’t seem like there’s anything I can do for him except keep an eye on it and let it heel. We had already planned to cut their nails tomorrow or Sunday, so hopefully it won’t hurt so much and he’ll let me get a good look.

Poor little dude!!! I imagine it is a bit sore – I say give it a few days and see if he seems better.

            BTW, I love Dexter :~)

I hate how much blood a nail injury can produce!

One time I clipped Jelly’s dewclaw and he pulled away as I clipped. It took the nail right off.
I think I put antibiotic powder on it at the time. Because it was the dewclaw it didn’t seem to trouble him too much.

I guess with the outer nail they put pressure on it. Poor Otto. He might just favour that paw for a while.

Our Dexter did the same thing about a month ago. Keep an eye out for changes in behavior and infection. Dexter was sore and grumpy for a few days after but he healed up no problem.

That happened to one of our pugs, Keika. I has to take her to the vet right away because it was bent and she was crying a lot. The vet cut it down to the paw, wrapped it and sent us home with pain meds and an antibiotic. I’m glad ur bunny didn’t have such a bad injury!
