Hi all! When I brought my bun home from the
breeder a month ago, she recommended I continue
what she did which was to add apple cider vinegar
(2 Tablespoons per gallon) to buns’ water to “keep
her gut healthy”. I have kept this up and Jo-Jo
doesn’t seem to mind at all, but I wonder if y ‘all
recommend this or not. I also have well water,
which is really wonderful water – but it is a little
high in minerals. What do you think?

I’ve never heard of doing this – I don’t know what it would have to do with keeping the gut healthy – that is what hay and veggies are for. I think fresh water is better actually.

No, I disagree with this. A healthy bunny will not need that. Clean, fresh, cool water is the healthiest thing possible. Would you like 2 tablespoons of vinegar in every glass of water you drink? Do you really think it’d do much for you, other than taste gross? I think you should stop this, and just introduce plenty of hay and a fresh variety of veggies, plus some pellets on the side. I’ve never heard of this, and I don’t think your bun needs it as long as it has a fresh and healthy diet! Breeders don’t always know best for our pets. I’m sure others can help further!

            Good luck ~ <3

It’s 2 Tblsp per GALLON, which works out to only a few drops in a large water bottle. I Googled this and apparently lots of people do this, but I also didn’t really see the need for it, (other than, apparently some folks say it keeps the urine from smelling, but we’re such clean -litter box fanatics I can’t see that being an issue). So I will definitely cut it out. Thanks for the input!

I’ve read this before as well but I think the only concrete reason is to improve the urine smell and that will change naturally once the bunny is spayed/neutered. If you noticed, most of the advocates for cider in their water came from breeders specifically and not regular house bunny owners.
I personally don’t do it but there doesn’t seem to be any real harm in it from what I can tell. And I know my bunny actually likes the taste because I make an apple cider and honey tea when my throat is sore and she always makes me share it with her but like the others said, there isn’t much need for it. Normal, nothing special water is much preferred.

ok, i’m new and I don’t like coming in on 2 year old conversations but I just got some for patrick for his water dish and he gave me a weird look, but I heard its good for alot of things on rabbits, it is “supposed” to be good for the urinary section. i’m no professional but I can see that since they tend to have alot of calcium in the urinary tract…

                      My 2 cents worth
