So I’ve noticed my bun, Lambda, is usually very neat. He’ll leave a stray poop or two every once in a while in his cage, but otherwise it stays clean. Recently, though, he’s been throwing random fits. I tried to change his HUGE litter box to one more appropriate for his size (he could still lay down in it), and at first he seemed OK with the change, but the next morning there were poops and pellets and hay everywhere! And I mean EVERYWHERE. I gave him back his old litterbox and he went back to normal. This weekend I went home for my sister’s highschool graduation and had one of my flatmates watch him, and apparently he’s been throwing fits all weekend! There was poop everywhere and even pee puddles, which is very unlike him.

Anyway, I wanted to get some opinions on it. Do you think it’s more likely his personality, a hormonal thing, or something to be concerned about? He’s a ~4 month old holland lop that hasn’t been neutered yet, but I have an appointment to see the vet July 3rd.

Could be hormonal and the change to his environment triggered him to mark.

Probably hormonal. Both my male buns were excellent with their litter box habits, until around 4 months – and then they started marking everything! It drove me nuts – but the peeing and pooing improved immensely after being fixed. Some buns take about 1 month to settle down – but my boys seemed to settle in a couple weeks.

Mine kicks all his hay, poop, and litter all over the floor if I don’t fill his litter box right. If I put in too much litter it will be all over the floor by the next day. He also likes bigger litter boxes than he can lay down in, smaller ones don’t end well around here. Mine is 2 years old next month and has been neutered for a long time.

Well, he didn’t throw another fit last night, so that’s a relief. Hopefully it’s just his undying love for myself and his litter box, and not him in some sort of pain or hormonal rampage. New bunny owner paranoia
