I just made her appointment for July 3rd! She peed on my featherbed last night… so it’s time for her to feel a little less territorial, I think!

I am kind of nervous about the surgery, but have found a really excellent rabbit vet (rumor has it her license plate says Bunniez or something similar!) so I just have to keep telling myself it will be over and she will be healed before I know it.

About how long should I expect her recovery to be? What have your experiences been with spaying/nuetering?

Hahaha, how old is your girl?

Recovery can depend. 3-5 days is how long she should be confined for – enough time for the incision to heal so she can’t tear it open from being active and whatnot. I think experiences can REALLY vary. My first girl was very depressed when she came home. It took a lot of coaxing and quite a few hours before she would try and eat anything and then her appetite slowly increased. She was obviously quite sore (she moved around very slowly and cautiously) so we gave her Metacam once a day. My second girl was just done a few weeks ago. She came home full of spunk and started eating right away. She didn’t even seem like she was spayed and didn’t seem to be in any pain (she was very active even though we had to confine her to a small space) so we didn’t bother with pain meds. My boys were both quite easy. I would expect her to be slightly depressed and stock up on some of her favorite vegetables to help coax her to eat sooner. It can be very depressing to watch them (it was with my first) but remember it will only last a few days and then she will be back to normal!

And you can always get moral support and advice on here when it’s time as well!

I think she must be at least 4 months old now. From what I have been reading, they are saying to do it as early as possible. She seems to be showing a lot of the signs (she has been kind of grunt-y/moody for a few weeks now). I guess worst case scenario if they say she is too young, at least I will get to talk to a knowledgeble rabbit vet and then just make plans for a new appt. But kind of just want it out of the way so I can quit feeling nervous about it, ya know?? I know it’s for the best, however. I had no idea that uterine cancer was such a problem for a female rabbit. 85% chance of it – that’s just horrible horrible odds…. So yeah, just want it out of the way and have little sassypants on the route to recovery.

It’s a very horrible issue for sure – waiting until 6 months won’t really put her at any risk I believe. She is still very young then. My first was done at 4 1/2 months though and was fine. My 2nd was done at 6 months but simply because she had some health issues and was a rescue bun. We wanted to get all of her issues straight and make sure she was healthy before putting her under.

It will most likely be up to your vet though – my vet preferred to wait until 5 months but did it at the 4 1/2 month mark for us anyways. It’s mainly an issue of them gaining as much weight as possible before the spay. Although at 6 months Nora only weighed 2.6 pounds and at 4 months Sidney weighed 4.5 lbs. Haha!
