         Hi,

We have a 2 year old dwarf lop rabbit named Smudge who has a recurrent UTI.

We noticed it around november 2012 that smudge who is litter trained was urinating small amounts outside of her cage.

Also her behind was very wet and messy completly unlike her.

after a day or so of this we took her to the vet.

The vet gave antibiotics and baytril and the UTI cleared up for a month or so until after christmas.

it came back with simlar symptoms this time the vet gave us cystaid in additon to the antibiotics.

Smudge was xrayed for sludge which came back clear.

its happened 2 more times since aswell we were given a longer course of antibitoics and then a pulse treatment was recomended with antibitoics being given for 5 days then stopped for 10 then 5 more days.

Its come back again now and the vet has again given antibiotics, taken a blood test to rule out EC and we must also put her though another xray.

Smudge lives with Chewie another dwarf lop also aged 2 in a large indoor cage which is cleaned out pretty much daily.

She has a half an egg cup of pellets each morning and access to timothy and medow hay with occasional fresh veg and very few treats.

Each time she has the antibiotics it clears up for a 3 weeks to a month but then comes back.

Has anyone else expereiced this and does anyone have any tips to clear up this UTI once and for all the VET did advise they are very hard to get rid of.

Maybe a urinalysis is needed? While she is off antibiotics.

The herbs uva ursi (aka bearberry I think) is supposed to be good for uti and rabbit safe. I’ve only ever seen it as a tea.
I think calendula is good too.
Bit sketchy with memory on that.

The EC blood test is sort of viewed as problematic. It might be worth doing a course of panacur just in case.
