Hello! Last night when I got home from work my bunny was not himself at all. I took him to vet. The vet listened to his stomach and said he hears no activity in his gut, and since he was not eating (but I didn’t know the last time he had a bowel movement) he diagnosed him as in stasis. The vet gave him a dose of liquids and gave me an antibiotic, critical care, and a med to get his gut moving again. Only a few hours after his first dose of meds and only 10 ml of critical care he started having bowl movements and slowly eating his dinner and hay. My concern this morning is that since he was not lethargic anymore it was unbelievable hard to give him his meds. He is eating some hay this morning but has not touched his veggies yet…but sometimes when he is traumatized by me touching him it takes him a while to eat again. I really do not think he will allow me to feed him critical care…but if he continues to slowly eat his regular diet should he be OK without the critical care? I will keep giving the meds but I honestly think it will do him more harm then good shoving critical care down his throat when he is starting to eat his regular diet again. This is so stressful I have only had him eight months and he has already been sick…I feel terrible.

I would call your vet and ask the vet what their advice is. You don’t want a relapse.

Firstly, it’s not your fault! There are so many reasons rabbits can stop eating and it’s hard for us to be able to find out why.

I would feel similar in letting him just eat on his own for now. That he is eating hay is great! best fibre to get things moving. is he drinking well?

What about ringing the vet to ask if you can hold off on the meds?

You can always try mixing the critical care up a bit thicker and putting it out for him in a bowl.

I find when my rabbits have gut problems, theyre not interested in all the usual favourite foods. I keep offering different things until I find one they’ll go for.
I’ve had success with willow leaves, rose leaves and petals dandelion leaves and just grass.

I called the vet and she had told me to put the critical care in a bowl and keep encouraging hay. I got a little paranoid though and gave him 10ml of critical care with his medicine…he didn’t finish all his greens this morning, and hasn’t had a bowel movement in a few hours. Thankfully he didn’t put up a fight with the critical care this time. I am so paranoid that the medicine isn’t getting in him. it sounds like he is chewing and sucking but then I also do critical care afterwards and his little chin is all wet…I don’t know if its the medicine or the critical care. I really hope he pulls through this

Hi guys me again…I was wondering if anyone could share a story where their bunny has gone through GI stasis. I’m feeling very sad for him because I keep shoving meds in his mouth and can’t tell him why. Now that he is eating he has more energy to fight me and a few drops of meds do not get in his mouth. He hasn’t gone to the bathroom in about 20 hours even though he is now eating fine. I try to put water in him and he refuses that as well. He is not himself and I feel so sad and I just hope he pulls through this. I just need to hear success stories if someone doesn’t mind.

I’ve had bunnies go through stasis many times. It’s stressful and sometimes lasts a few days.

                    How is your bunny today?

If he is still not pooping regularly, I suggest you call your vet. I suspect some IV fluids from the vet would do him good. That’s always the first step when my buns are brought to the vet in stasis. Often, fluids make a big difference.

Thank you for the reply! I just really need support right now I cannot believe how attached I am to my bunny. I have actually found over the last 24 hours that he is pooping more regularly…and he is eating his regular diet just more slowly than usual. I really feel like the stress of getting meds is just affecting his mood and he isn’t his usual happy self who gets into trouble and tries with all his might to get into rooms he’s not allowed. As I was typing that last sentence he ran around a bit doing some binkies but now he is huddled and still and I know he is going to be like that for a while now. Through this whole experience I have realized NOTHING is harder than watching an animal suffer through an illness. I know he is feeling sick but his eating and pooing makes him seem better but then why is he so depressed! I can’t stop crying! I did call the vet today and the vet wasn’t available to chat but they are calling me tomorrow so I can speak to the vet about whether or not I should take him to be force fed critical care..because now that he is eating more and has more energy I focus all my energy on getting his meds in and just can’t do the critical care! He won’t let me! Trust me I have tried!

                        How is he doing today?

Stasis is a pretty serious thing for a bunny and sometimes it takes them a few days to fully recover and get their energy back.

If he is pooping and eating pretty much his regular amount, he’s most likely on the road to recovery. The most important thing is that food is getting through and that tummy keeps working.

Hello! Waffles is doing better…tomorrow is the last day of meds and now I’m so scared of how he will do once the meds are done. So scary to think about. But his diet is back to normal and so are his bowel movements from what I can see but he isn’t his happy self still. I truly believe its because of being picked up all the time and he hates being picked up. So we will see. Gotta stay positive its been a rough week.

You mention in another thread about his teeth – I would address that issue as this is one of the causes of stasis and if it’s not addressed it could be a problem.

The vet said the spurs were not causing damage and he believes that they were just starting to develop due to the fact that my bunny was not eating as much hay as usual for whatever reason. He believes now that he is eating properly the spurs will not get to the point of causing him discomfort. That being said, waffles is doing well and has eaten a tonne of hay…last night I couldn’t believe the amount he ate. He loves the new brand I have bought for him…I think the last bag had too many hard pieces I thought I was going through it slower then usual…but couldn’t really tell because it was so gradual. He is doing so much better…day by day its just more and more improvement.

I’m happy to be reading Waffles is doing better. He’s a gorgeous little rabbit!

                                A quick question:
Does he use a sipper bottle or water bowl?

I’d consider getting a second opinion about his teeth. He’s only young and I wouldn’t have thought cause of the molar spurs would be just from his chewing hay less. It’s more likely due to malocclusion is my guess.
