Hello, In know most of you know that our latest bunney rescued needs Dental surgery because of abscesses in his jaw. I have never questioned my vet, and always trusted them. But this surgery that Gizmo is facing is scaring me. They have never performed this surgery before on a rabbit. They have always been so good with all of our bunnies. They have done this surgery on cats before, and told me its a little different. They ensured me that Gizmo would be their only patient that day if I choose to let them do the surgery. I know he has to have it, I am just so worried after all this poor bunny has been through. I am worried about thier lack of experience in this type of surgery. does anyone have any advice? the only other nearest vet that is rabbit savey is about 3 hours away. Am I just being over protective?

Did you post about this somewhere else? This is the first I’m reading about this. Abscesses are not uncommon, why is this situation so unique?

Is the surgery just to have the abscess cleaned out or are they removing teeth?

Well, there are always risks whether the vet is knowledgeable or not and the risk of not doing anything is detrimental to his health.

              What exactly are your concerns?

My concern was that the teeth have to come out and he has no experience on rabbits for this type of surgery. He has treated rabbits for many other things, but htis is his first dental extraction. I guess my concern was on if I should seek another vet with more experience.

I guess it wouldn’t hurt to see if you can find another vet in your area with more experience in this procedure. Usually what happens with teeth in abscessed areas is that they come out pretty easily though because of the infection.

After calling around, I was unable to find another vet that would work with bunnies. The nearest one other than my own vet is all the way in Saint Louis, MO which is about 4 hours away. So I set up Gizmo to have surgery on July 1st. Please keep him in your prayers. I will post more information on him soon. Thank you all!

All you can really do is just trust that the vet will take his time, and try to be optimistic about the outcome. I know you don’t want to think about this, but every medical and veterinary professional does a procedure on a real patient “for the first time” at some point. It’s tough knowing your bun is the first, but it sounds like they are doing their research and are going to be very cautious.

Please keep us posted how he does… easy surgery vibes for Gizmo!

I agree with Beka on this as well. I think if you trust them overall then you should just go for it…you really need to get this taken care of no matter what.

                        Vibes for Gizmo.

OK, Update 100, lol I was referred to Hope Animal Hospital in Saint Louis. They are sending his exam and x-rays to them now. My vet said he would rather let a specialist take care of it to make sure he doesn’t cause any more injury or issues that he might not have seen. I am just so freaked out by this, cause I never had any of my buns have to have anything this big done.

Oh! Okay, well that sounds good. Are you more comfortable with this?

Yes, this is the same hospital that the Missouri House Rabbit Society uses for all of their bunnies. Gizmo has had such a hard life, I want to make sure he is given the love he deserves. Y’all understand, they are my babies!!

So that is a 4 hour drive for you isn’t it?

Of course I know about bunnies being your babies! My bunnies are pretty much my whole world.

I would probably not take the risk as well and go for the drive. It’s only a one time deal, after all.

Poor little Gizmo. But he is so lucky to have bun-parents that are willing to do anything it takes to make him well.

Well here is a copy of Gizmo’s Treatment plan. As long as the price doesn’t go up we are ok, but we are trying to put together the aditional posibility for an aditional $500.00 cost. we have the $900 now and scheduled his surgery for the 9th of July. so far he is doing well. We will keep y’all posted. thank you for all of your advice and help!!

Oh my goodness Bullrider! I am so sorry about Gizmo. I know you mentioned he had teeth issues but poor baby. I hope everything goes well! Have you taken Gizmo on car rides before? Is he okay with them? I’ve noticed that with my buns the more they are in the car the more relaxed they are. So maybe you can try taking Gizmo on some short car rides to help him deal with the stress of the four hour drive.

He has been in our car a few times. the first was to bring him home and that was about an hour, and he fell asleep. the others were to our local vet which is about 15 minutes away, it hasn’t seemed to phase him. we are going to bring his stuffie for support and a little bowl for water and some food.
