I was never a cuddly person, so beside my rough farm animals, I never saw myself with a pocket pet, especially not a rabbit. But in my days in high school in my animal science class, there was a rabbit that had severe malocclusion and its teeth looked like tusks. Everyone called her ugly and she was never let out of her wire bottom cage because she wasn’t little trained and had diarrhea. My heart melted at this little rabbit. She had lived all of her four years in that wire cage in a class room where I saw the students stab her with pencils, rattle her cage and pull her fur. She became mean. My teacher decided they no longer needed her and no one would take her, so I found myself taking her. Without my parents knowing or approving. Boy did they have a shock! (And me a stern talking to). But when we got her to the vet and found out that her tee had grown into her face, she was underweight and her fur matted, we fell in love. We got her surgeries (1500$ worth) and she, although she never liked to be held, was our baby. We kept this so called mean rabbit in the daycare with children and she was the priss and loved to be petted and loved. Everyone loved Martha. Well, one day Martha wasn’t herself. So we rushed her to the vet, later he called and said she would be fine but they were keeping her the night, so we went to bed. I woke the next morning to my sobbing mother on the phone with the vet, who was also in tears, she had died. We didn’t want the autospy done and ruin her perfect body, so she lay in peace. The only explanation they could give us is that her years of bad diet and caged life left crystals in her stomach. My whole household fell apart. In Martha’s memory, I’ve rescued 2 more rabbits (a lop and a dwarf, the dwarf sadly dying do to a spine injury) and obtained my woolie. I will always love my Martha

I’m sorry about Martha’s passing. What a sad story but I’m so very glad she had a loving home in the end.

My condolences, but she passed knowing she was loved. And that’s what matters <3

Wow. What a beautiful memorial post to Martha.

So many of our rabbits have come from less than ideal situations. Whether they were abused or neglected or allowed to suffer with a medical condition, what matters is that they found a forever home and knew love in their final days.

I’m thankful you took her in, and major KUDOS to your parents for going above and beyond for a “surprise” rabbit.

She sounds like she was incredibly special.
