  Hi I have two rabbits that are brother and sister they are 4 months old. They are New Zealand’s and are NOT housed together not taking any chances. And where I live nobody will spay/neuter rabbits. But my female has been happy and playful until recently she has been squeezing into her igloo/hut thing and digging all the bedding out and now stays in there.. She eats way more than she used to.. I just hope she isn’t sick! Any help??

  You said that your rabbits were 4 months? Well, I’m sorry to tell you this, but the recommended age to get a female rabbit spayed is 6 months. If you get her spayed to young you are taking a BIG chance because even death can occur before 6 months because 4 months is still considered a ‘baby’.

  lula1128 the reason it is recommended to spay at 6 months is not due to possible death – that is not correct – it is due to hormones (estrogen) helping with bone development…

  but babies are more at risk for death during the procidure.

  Well at four months a rabbit has hit puberty and they are no longer babies. Male rabbits can be altered once their testicles descend which is around 3.5 to 4 months.
